Chatham House Prizegiving, Audiences at Buckingham Palace, and Church at Windsor Castle

The Queen attended the 2019 Chatham House Prizegiving event at Chatham House, London. Earlier in the day, she held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

The Small Pink and Diamond Brooch was the definite selection for the evening's event...

...and it was my first thought for the day, although it looks like that could be something of a different shape in the end. Two outfits does usually mean two different brooches.

November  17: The Queen attended church while staying at Windsor Castle for the weekend.

No question here, though: the Flower Basket, on just its second appearance for the year.

Balmoral Holiday, 2019

Hansueli Krapf, CC BY-SA 4.0

The Queen's annual break at Balmoral in Scotland is in full swing, with a couple of Sunday church appearances ahead of her official welcome to the castle. The Balmoral holiday usually lasts into October.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

***********

NEW! October 6: A brooch for Lady Sarah Chatto will have to do for what should be the last church outing of the Balmoral break, as Her Maj went for none. There's a London engagement planned for The Queen on Friday.

September 29: Closing out September with the Diamond and Pearl Navette Brooch, already on its fourth outing of the year.

September 22: Back to a standard this week, the Pearl Trefoil Brooch.  Plus a different family member in the guest seat.

September 15: The Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge for church today.

September 8: A lovely big pop of blue from Prince Albert's Sapphire Brooch adorned The Queen's coat for this Sunday's church service.

September 7: This looks to be a jolly group: The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, and Peter and Autumn Phillips joined Her Maj for this year's Braemar Gathering. The Queen naturally continued her tradition of wearing the Braemar Feather Brooch for the event.

September 1: The Tudor Rose Brooch made the trip to Scotland for this morning's church service.

August 25: I'm so glad we got a decent view of today's church brooch - we've only seen the Diamond and Ruby Butterfly Brooch one other time since this site started, back in 2012. We probably have Her Maj's car companion, The Duchess of Cambridge, to thank for that.

August 18: The Sapphire Jubilee Snowflake Brooch gets its third outing of the year for a trip to church with the Wessexes (or the Forfars, I suppose, since Edward now has the title of The Earl of Forfar for use when in Scotland).

August 17: The Queen attended a craft fair at Crathie Kirk Hall in the biggest brooch of the break so far, Queen Mary's Turquoise and Diamond Brooch.

August 11: The Small Pink and Diamond Brooch for another Sunday drive to church.

August 6: The Queen's official welcome (after staying at another property until the castle closes to visitors and is readied for her) involves a guard of honor and therefore, as it often does, the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge.

August 4: Another Sunday church mystery and my half thought is maybe the Greville Scroll Brooch? [Daily Mail]

July 28: The first Sunday outing for church at Crathie Kirk of the break, and unsurprisingly, the brooch is difficult to identify.

Great brooch-to-dress match here, no?

Bush House Opening

The Queen, Patron, and The Duchess of Cambridge visited King's College London to open Bush House.
Royal Family

Nice to see another face join the rotating cast of family members accompanying The Queen after The Duke of Edinburgh's retirement, isn't it? I'm picturing a Wheel of Fortune type deal, with family photos spinning around to see which one ends up as the day's lucky companion...

Royal Family

Anyway, it's new Catherine Walker for Kate and it looks a lot like some older ones to me, so I can't muster up a bunch to say about that.

Royal Family

I will thank her, though, because it seems her fashion details gave way to some additional reporting on Her Maj's own fashion specifics: a Stewart Parvin old rose cashmere coat and a silk dress with autumnal woodland shades of grey, fuchsia, and olive. Her matching hat is by Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat and she wore her pink sapphire and diamond surround brooch.

Her Maj is back, her brooch is back, we've got a wide shot for those of you that love a game of Side Table Photo Identification, this honored guest is wearing a splendid coat for visiting a room with bird statues on the mantle (she's The Hon. Vicki O'Halloran, visiting to mark her appointment as Administrator of the Northern Territory in Australia), all is well.

Christmas Service and Christmas Broadcast, 2018

Merry Christmas! We'll be chatting about the other fashions from the British royal family's Christmas church gathering at the other blog tomorrow. But first, The Queen:

The Queen, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, attended Christmas service at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham.

Interesting outfit choice from Her Maj today, perhaps overdoing it with the festive trimmings - that's a loud pink trim on the coat and some Camilla-level feather overload on the hat. She accented the bright pink with her pink sapphire.

The Queen's annual message was broadcast on Christmas Day.

The Grima Ruby got the nod for this year's Christmas broadcast. A somewhat puzzling choice to me, given the dress seems to have some blue in it, but certainly a family-themed one (as a gift from Philip). That fits right in line with all the family events of the year, which were represented in the photographs on display and in the content of the speech (which you can view here).

Just the third appearance of the year for the Small Pink sapphire. It's gonna have to step up its game if it wants to make the annual favorites list again.

Chelsea Flower Show

The Queen and other Members of The Royal Family visited the Chelsea Flower Show.

After 5 straight years of wearing the Chelsea Iris Brooch, her Diamond Jubilee gift from the Royal Horticultural Society, Her Maj breaks rank to finish off a very pink outfit with a very pink brooch. She certainly fit right in with her surroundings.

Royal Family

Let's get one FAQ out of the way real quick: Why isn't she wearing a hat? Because this visit happens later in the day; she arrived just before 6 pm. She's been without a hat - or with one of her infamous bow- or flower-adorned hairnets - for this event since the late 1960s.

We've got our first brooch-in-the-wild sighting of 2018, and it's pink! May this bring us a colorful brooch year from here on out.

This brooch seems to be on Ascot duty this year, appearing during the usual summer meeting and now again for Her Maj's annual autumn day at the races. It's a nice match for this very textured coat, no?

Royal Ascot, Day 3

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.

Some of us thought Day 1's lime green outfit would have been fun with a pink brooch. Clearly, The Queen had other plans, and saved her pink sapphire brooch for use with this vibrant fuchsia outfit. Note how closely the floral dress pattern matches the flowers on this Angela Kelly hat, even more precisely than usual.

Also getting in on the colorful fun: The Duke of York, stepping in with The Duke of Edinburgh at home recuperating from his infection and The Prince of Wales elsewhere, who saved up his best pink accessories to match her.

Once again, highlights from more family members still to come at the other blog!

Motability 40th Anniversary Ceremony

The Queen, Patron, hosted a ceremony at Windsor Castle to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Motability, a charity providing vehicles to disabled people and their families.
For more: Zimbio gallery.

The Queen presented keys to new vehicles to some families as part of this event, which I assume she managed to do without shouting "You get a car! You get a car!", as I most certainly would have done.

Female Permanent Secretaries Reception, and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace celebrating past and present women in government leadership (Permanent Secretaries).

I love this, wearing a brooch that belonged to a notable female leader for a reception recognizing women in government. Today was the first sapphire appearance of her Sapphire Jubilee year, and...

Engagement and Wedding Rings

Earlier, The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

...it was actually a double sapphire day. Several of you noted that you hoped to see this pink sapphire on my list of Her Maj's top sapphires, and while it didn't make my cut, I also can't argue.

Anytime we can see a brooch at these audiences feels like a minor miracle. Okay, it's not exactly easy to see this brooch, but it is there and it is the pink sapphire and we will take it.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Base Opening, and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened a new operational base for East Anglian Air Ambulance at Cambridge Airport, where The Duke of Cambridge is a helicopter pilot.

This is a pretty perfect brooch for this outfit, picking up on a little of the floral dress beneath. (This photo's for those of you that were entertained by William dwarfing his grandparents at the Thistle service last week, by the way.)

A visit with her grandson was supposed to be the highlight of Her Maj's day. Instead, it was a quick trip back to Buckingham Palace as the revolving door of prime ministers spun once more:

David Cameron had an Audience of The Queen, and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister. The Queen the received in audience Theresa May and requested her to form a new Administration.

Welcoming your thirteenth British prime minister does call for something a little larger on the brooch front.

Commonwealth Hub Launch

This is the second pink outfit in a row proving that this pink sapphire brooch is the perfect match for a busy pink pattern. I wouldn't mind swapping this plump marshmallow of a hat for the last one, though.

Berkhamsted School Visit and Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen, Patron, visited Berkhamsted School, Hertfordshire, to celebrate its 475th anniversary.

A perfect brooch selection, this is - in color, style, and size. Well done, Your Maj.

May 5: The Queen received the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, for a private audience at Buckingham Palace.

Another audience, another brooch staple.

Lister Community School Visit and Audiences

Today: The Queen visited a Queen's Trust beneficiary, Lister Community School, in Plaistow, East London.
I'm always happy to see this pink sapphire in action. On this occasion, though, I can't help but think the plain background of this coat could have handled something a little bigger...

After all my whining about not being able to see brooches at audiences, we've finally got one that's identifiable. Hilariously, it's one I probably would have guessed with or without the clear view.

The Longest Reign, and the Borders Railway Opening

The day is here! At approximately 5:30 local time, The Queen will pass Queen Victoria as the longest reigning monarch in Britain and the other realms, a reign of 63 years, 7 months, 2 days, 16 hours, and 23 minutes. Her Majesty is staying at Balmoral Castle with her family, but emerged for one engagement today.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, opened the Borders-to-Edinburgh railway in Scotland.
Could it have been anything other than one of Queen Victoria's Bow Brooches? This is one of the brooches best known for having come from her great-great grandmother, but it's also one that we see all the time - right in keeping with her desire not to make a fuss on this day.

BBC video screencap
She did make a short speech today (which you can see here, along with other tributes). Making brief note of her milestone, which she said was "not one to which I have ever aspired," she also conveyed her thanks: "Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones - my own is no exception - but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness."

Buckingham Palace also released a new portrait by Mary McCartney (yes, daughter of Paul) for the occasion. With her favorite pearls in place, the Small Pink and Diamond Brooch pinned on, and her trusty handbag nearby, this is a reassuring image of The Queen that everybody knows so well. (A second shot can be seen here.)

Picturing the 89-year-old sovereign at work with one of the famous red boxes of state papers and in front of a photograph of her mother, who lived and worked past the century mark, it seems there is a clear message to be read here: Her Majesty's not done yet. And long may she reign!
