Westminster School Visit

The Queen officially opened the new sports hall during a visit to Westminster School.

Mint is not a favorite of mine, so this ensemble (a Peter Enrione outfit and Angela Kelly hat) is one I'm not so sure about, but she did match the school, and even the curtain drawn to unveil the plaque was pink. Anyway, we haven't seen this brooch of the Queen Mother's in over a year according to my list, which is surprising as I still think of it as a favorite.

State Visit from the UAE, Welcome Ceremony and State Luncheon

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh welcomed the President of the United Arab Emirates , His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at the beginning of his State Visit to the United Kingdom. The welcome was followed by a State Luncheon at Windsor Castle.

This state visit's a bummer: no state banquet, only a state luncheon. That means no tiaras. Le sigh.

Jubilee Stained Glass Window Unveiling

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, attended a Service of Dedication to unveil the Diamond Jubilee stained glass window at the Queen's Chapel of the Savoy.

I love this window! It features the Queen on a horse with a corgi tagging along, plus the quote from her 21st birthday speech that has defined her reign: "I declare before you all my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service." Now, that's what I call a tribute.

Visit to the West Midlands, Day 1

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen began her two day visit to the West Midlands in celebration of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. The royal couple visited Hereford and Worcester.
Just when you think the Jubilee madness has stopped, the tours kick up again! The Dynamic Duo will be at this until the end of the month.

The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch

The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch
One of the Queen Mother's favorite brooches was this palm leaf, created for her by Cartier from stones already in her collection in 1938. It includes a center of brilliant diamonds of varying shapes inside a curved diamond border.
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
The Queen Mother wore it throughout her life. It can even be spotted in the iconic "Three Queens in Mourning" photograph taken after the death of King George VI.
Three queens in mourning: Elizabeth II, Mary, and Elizabeth
The current queen inherited the brooch when her mother passed away in 2002, and it pops on and off her list of favorites.

Prior to learning any sort of official information on the brooch - from the recently published The Queen's Diamonds, by Hugh Roberts - I, like many jewel watchers, had called this one the Paisley Brooch, and so it will always remain in my mind.

Diamond Jubilee Armed Forces Parade and Muster

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended the Armed Forces Parade and Muster at Windsor Castle to commemorate Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. Members of the Royal Family and of Foreign Royal Families were also present.
She wore one of her mother's brooches, not that anyone was paying much attention with all the medals and flypast awesomeness happening.

Diamond Jubilee Pageant Tea Party

The Queen hosted a tea party for the performers of the Windsor Horse Show Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Windsor Castle.
Look at all this swag for Liz: a new sombrero, and she got a hug from a child (to everyone's shock but her own) and a new bracelet to boot. The woven bead bracelet was given to her by Rose Kimanzi from the Kenyan delegation, and she popped it on (with Ms. Kimanzi's help) straight away.

And of course, her new bracelet!

Commonwealth Day Observance Service

The Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended the Commonwealth Day Observance Service in Westminster Abbey.
Odd that her lapel covers the brooch. She's usually more planned out than that.
