Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors 150th Anniversary

The Queen, Patron, visited the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in London to mark the organization's 150th anniversary.

Amazing how different a brooch can look when it's just worn differently, no? I nearly thought this one was something new, before a better look revealed that it is simply the Modern Ruby Brooch worn upside down from its normal position. That's the easiest sort of brooch variety, and it's a nice change.

The Modern Ruby Brooch looks so different from this angle, no? Almost got my hopes up for something new...

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended church at Sandringham, Norfolk. The Duke of York and Princess Eugenie were also present.
Brooch appearance fact of the day: this is the third year in a row we've seen the Modern Ruby Brooch make a Sandringham church appearance. Also note that this triple strand of pearls is different from her everyday selection.

State Visit from China, Welcome Ceremony

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family welcomed the President of The People’s Republic of China, Mr. Xi Jinping, and Madame Peng Liyuan at the start of his State Visit to the United Kingdom.
Obviously, I find this lilac gray Stewart Parvin tweed coat and Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat would have been enhanced by a touch of amethysts, but that's how I always feel, so never mind me. Instead, we get the Modern Ruby Brooch to kick off this much-anticipated (and controversial) state visit.

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall met the Chinese first couple at their hotel and escorted them to the welcome ceremony today.

It was nice to see The Duchess in a suite of jewels we've covered here before, including regular favorites in the form of her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings, her Gold Chain Bracelet with Multi-Color Stones, and her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Small Diamond Clasp. She also wore her pair of Cosmos Brooches from Van Cleef & Arpels.

UPDATES:
Back at Buckingham Palace, the traditional exchange of gifts occurred. The Queen gave the Chinese president a collection of Shakespeare's sonnets in a specially commissioned leather and gilt box and a pair of Royal Crown Derby candlesticks for Madame Peng, in addition to the standard gift of a silver-framed set of portraits of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. From President Xi, The Queen received two of Madame Peng's albums (she's a famous folk singer in China) along with a 1.18 meter long work of embroidery, a stamp booklet, and a wood carving.

The President and Madame Peng joined The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall for tea at Clarence House, where Camilla changed into her pearl choker with an Art Deco sapphire clasp, the newest addition to her choker collection.

The Duke of Cambridge also met with the President today, at Buckingham Palace.

And The Queen inspected the scene for the state banquet, as she always does! Updated to add: In this Flickr behind-the-scenes gallery, we can identify The Queen's brooch as the Flower Basket Brooch.

Stay tuned for another post later for tonight's state banquet.

The Queen entered her 63rd year on the throne this week, marking the anniversary of her accession as she usually does, by spending it quietly at Sandringham. I really wasn't surprised to read today that so far, she plans to celebrate the day she becomes the longest reigning monarch in British history (September 9, 2015) in a similarly low-key fashion, at Balmoral. Much more her style.

Flashback: Christmas Service

Before we get too far into January, let's dip back for a quick flash of the Queen's Christmas outfits - and not the broadcasts this time. The royal family camps out at Sandringham in Norfolk for the holiday (though they have previously celebrated at Windsor Castle instead) and they venture out for church on Christmas Day. Her Majesty's brooch selections for the past few years show a preference for baubles from her late mother's collection - for this sentimental holiday, not a surprise - and for firm favorites. The biggest surprise of the past few years, I would say, was her debut of a new Jubilee gift in 2012:
2007: None!
Which year was your favorite? (Preferential to the fantastic red of 2009, myself!)

In current news...First brooch sighting for 2014! The Queen popped out for church on January 5th wearing the Modern Ruby Brooch. Last year's first brooch ended up at the top of the outings count for the whole year...but I have to say I'm already hoping that won't be the case with this little brooch. (Not a fave, no indeed.)

State Visit from South Korea, Farewell

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh bid farewell to the President of the Republic of Korea, Park Geun-hye, at the conclusion of her State Visit to the United Kingdom.

I didn't realize the Modern Ruby Brooch hadn't been seen since April 2012...guess I didn't miss it much.

The Modern Ruby Brooch

The Modern Ruby Brooch
Another of the brooches acquired by the Queen is this arched design. A modern design of gold with diamonds and diamond-topped sprays, it is accented with a row of rubies on one side.
The generic shape of this one, and its light use of rubies (allowing it to be paired with red and pink outfits but with other colors as well) make it easy for the Queen to pair with outfits, and she's worn it for decades.
