NATO Leaders Reception and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for Heads of State and Government of NATO countries to mark 70 years of the Alliance.
Royal Family

Folks, we've got a three brooch day on our hands. #1: The Palm Leaf Brooch accented the scarf on Her Maj's outfit for the evening reception.

#2: The Jardine Star came along for a private audience with the NATO Secretary General.

And #3: I thought this would be the same because the outfit is the same, but if you can make it out, it's yet another one! The Maple Leaf Brooch handled the other audience duties for the day.

Let's bop back to the NATO reception for a second before we go, because there were other family members with more gems...

Royal Family

Naturally, one of The Duchess of Cornwall's favorite (and signature) pearl chokers was her pick for the event.

The Duchess of Cambridge leaned into the evening side of things with the Diamond Pendant Earrings on loan again from The Queen.

Royal Family

The Duchess of Gloucester was right there with her with emerald earrings and a necklace of pearls and emeralds, part of a set originating with Queen Alexandra that was later worn and altered by Queen Mary and Princess Alice.

And finally, it looks like The Princess Royal selected her Grima pearl earrings.

The Dorset Bow Brooch made a repeat appearance for today's somber ceremony, once again anchoring The Queen's cluster of poppies.

She was flanked on the balcony by The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge, both wearing brooches of significance. The Duchess of Cornwall wore the badge of the 9/12th Lancers, a piece that belonged to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and is selected by Camilla because her late father was a member of the 12th Lancers. The Duchess of Cambridge's brooch is the Codebreakers poppy brooch from the Royal British Legion, honoring those that worked in signal intelligence; her grandmother and great-aunt worked at the Bletchley Park code-breaking facility during World War II. She also wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings on loan from The Queen.

On another balcony, The Countess of Wessex wore her Rifles Badge (she is the Royal Colonel of the 5th Battalion) with a poppy brooch, while simple poppies graced both The Duchess of Sussex and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

And down on the ground, The Prince of Wales led the rest of the family in laying their wreaths at the base of the Cenotaph.

A trio of jewel picks from The Queen that are regulars this time of year: Queen Alexandra's Wedding Earrings and a longer triple strand of pearls, both regularly seen at this event, and the Dorset Bow Brooch, a favorite for holding her cluster of poppies.

I'm short on time tonight so I won't do a full run through of all the family members, except to say that I noted The Duchess of Cambridge wearing the Silver Jubilee Diamond and Pearl Earrings that she has loaned from The Queen in the past.

Royal Ascot, Day 1

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.

Let the brooch (and hat) (okay, mostly hat) fun begin! A jauntily flipped brim straight out of the Beauxbatons Academy + a Sapphire Jubilee present from Canada = a magical match for Her Maj on Day 1 of Ascot.

Embed from Getty Images

I have been waiting for an excuse for Queen Máxima to come to Ascot for-e-ver and HERE SHE IS, staying to enjoy the races with King Willem-Alexander after attending Garter Day. Nobody takes a plant to the face with more panache. And she made up for any carat deficit from yesterday with maaaaajor earrings from the Stuart Tiara (!) and a giant diamond bracelet. ("Out jewel me once, shame on you; out jewel me twice, shame on me." - Máx, probably.)

Embed from Getty Images

I have been waiting for the British royals to dig into Elie Saab for-e-ver and The Duchess of Cambridge DID IT. And then she totally picked pieces that look like other stuff she has in her closet, like I could have confused this with Temperley easily. Well trolled.

Embed from Getty Images

The baby shower-ready pastels continued with The Duchess of Cornwall, not that she ever needs an excuse a pastel outfit with a giant hat. She wore, as usual, her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings. Zara Tindall tied the group together with a floral that is basically one puffy sleeve away from the 80s.

Embed from Getty Images

For a little more hat interest, we must travel to the rest of the family, where both The Princess Royal and The Countess of Wessex offered up some under-brim interest. Honestly, I liked Sophie's whole deal a lot more before I realized it's the dress fabric on the hat. Maybe with some contrast I'd be on board.

Embed from Getty Images

Of course, the York sisters did offer up some colorful contrast and I'm not really on board with either Beatrice's random tassels or Eugenie's visible headband, so probably there's no pleasing me any way. Points for an Ascot attempt, though.

Garter Day

The Queen gave a Luncheon Party for the Companions for the Most Noble Order of the Garter. A Service was held in St. George's Chapel this afternoon.

Hey hey it's Garter Day, featuring Bonus Royal Action! Before we get to that, though, it's Her Maj herself. She was decked out in diamonds this year, including Queen Mary's Cluster Earrings. Those have been more commonly spotted at the Order of the Thistle Service in recent years.

Here's your Bonus Royal Action: The King of Spain and The King of the Netherlands showed up to be formally invested as Supernumerary or "Stranger" Knights of the Garter. Both received the honor during their recent state visits to the United Kingdom.

Royal Family

Queen Letizia and Queen Máxima didn't miss a chance to show up in their behatted best, making for an extra splendiforous royal spouse line up this year.

Embed from Getty Images

Queen Máxima just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that she's still into the ginormous belts, while The Duchess of Cambridge (in the Collingwood Pearl and Diamond Earrings from Diana) is here to reassure you that her supply of proper Catherine Walker princess gear is never-ending. Thanks for the updates, ladies.

Embed from Getty Images

Rare is the day when Queen Máxima gets out-jeweled, but she must have felt the sting of a missed opportunity when Letizia and Camilla rolled up. Queen Letizia came to play, bless her, with no less than the earrings from the joyas de pasar earrings and a diamond brooch (!!) (this one's from Queen Sofia). The Duchess of Cornwall matched her gem for gem in her magnificent Pink Topaz Choker and its accompanying earrings, huzzah. Deeeelightful.

Trooping the Colour

Her Majesty, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, was present at The Queen's Birthday Parade on Horse Guards Parade at which the Colour of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards was trooped.
Embed from Getty Images

Rather a sedate outfit choice from The Queen today for her big birthday parade; she sort of blended in with the interior of her carriage and the Guards Badge - her choice for this event for many years now - faded into the coat. Can't be a neon queen every year, right?

The Duchess of Cambridge wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings on loan from The Queen again with her Alexander McQueen outfit (a silhouette to die for in a color I'll never love, alas) and Philip Treacy hat. The Duchess of Cornwall again wore her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings with her repeated minty fresh outfit. The Duchess of Sussex popped in from maternity leave in Givenchy.

Embed from Getty Images

Princess Beatrice and The Countess of Wessex were probably able to spend their time chatting about Emilia Wickstead, since Sophie owns this dress too. Thankfully she didn't wear her version today, instead opting for a vibrant green Suzannah repeat. (A nice colorful bookend in this picture with Autumn Phillips' magenta.)

I hate to be brief on a big royal day, but sometimes needs must. And so, with a Prince Louis-style wave...

Bush House Opening

The Queen, Patron, and The Duchess of Cambridge visited King's College London to open Bush House.
Royal Family

Nice to see another face join the rotating cast of family members accompanying The Queen after The Duke of Edinburgh's retirement, isn't it? I'm picturing a Wheel of Fortune type deal, with family photos spinning around to see which one ends up as the day's lucky companion...

Royal Family

Anyway, it's new Catherine Walker for Kate and it looks a lot like some older ones to me, so I can't muster up a bunch to say about that.

Royal Family

I will thank her, though, because it seems her fashion details gave way to some additional reporting on Her Maj's own fashion specifics: a Stewart Parvin old rose cashmere coat and a silk dress with autumnal woodland shades of grey, fuchsia, and olive. Her matching hat is by Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat and she wore her pink sapphire and diamond surround brooch.

Commonwealth Day

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended the Commonwealth Day observance service at Westminster Abbey.
Westminster Abbey

I was going to say that the Kent Amethyst Brooch would have been my preference on Her Maj's outfit for the Prince of Wales' reception last week, but never mind - she didn't keep me waiting to see it too long! The color on this repeated Angela Kelly ensemble is a perfectly luscious background for this historic amethyst gem.

Two royal ladies in purple, it's my lucky day. With her Bruce Oldfield coat and Philip Treacy hat, The Duchess of Cornwall donned a favorite combo: her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings and Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp.

Embed from Getty Images

Camilla kept up her blingy purple mood for the evening reception at Marlborough House, where she wore her new(er) purple stone choker and her big amethyst earrings.

Westminster Abbey

With her repeated Catherine Walker coat and new hat, The Duchess of Cambridge brought the jewel intrigue:

Embed from Getty Images

A fascinating pair of new-to-us diamond earrings. I've had lots of questions already if they're loans from The Queen; if they are, they're nothing known to me. They also have significant differences from the tops of the diamond and pearl earrings the late Diana, Princess of Wales received as a wedding gift from the Emir of Qatar, another comparison I've seen made.

Embed from Getty Images

Last but never least, The Duchess of Sussex went for Victoria Beckham in her second outfit of the day. I'm itching to tweak the hat, but an otherwise solid appearance.

The Duchesses at The Prince of Wales' 70th Birthday Party

The Queen hosted a 70th birthday party for The Prince of Wales tonight at Buckingham Palace.
Chris Jackson/Clarence House

Tonight's party for Prince Charles was deemed a private event and no pictures were released from inside, mainly leaving us with a few car photos of guests arriving - except, of course, for the birthday boy himself. Charles and Camilla posed for a portrait before leaving Clarence House.

The Duchess wore a new navy gown by Bruce Oldfield with her Pear Drop Diamond Demi-Parure and her favorite diamond bracelet. The necklace and earrings have been among her favorite jewels in her marriage, and with good reason. A fabulous glittering look for them both!

The Royal Family did publish The Queen's touching birthday toast to her son:

“It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday. It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up.

It is rather like - to use an analogy I am certain will find favour - planting a tree and being able to watch it grow. My mother saw me turn 70, of course. And she was heard to observe that 70 is exactly the age when the number of candles on your cake finally exceeds the amount of breath you have to blow them out.

Over his 70 years, Philip and I have seen Charles become a champion of conservation and the arts, a great charitable leader - a dedicated and respected heir to the throne to stand comparison with any in history - and a wonderful father. Most of all, sustained by his wife Camilla, he is his own man, passionate and creative.

So this toast is to wish a happy birthday to my son, in every respect a duchy original. To you Charles. To the Prince of Wales.”

From the other two top duchesses in the family, we got a duo of mystery earrings.

Embed from Getty Images

The Duchess of Sussex wore the pair of earrings she debuted at a dinner in Fiji on the couple's recent tour. It was said that they are borrowed - but the palace declined to specify from whom they were borrowed. Since they usually say when things come from The Queen, I'm inclined to believe these are not from HM's vault. Time might tell, I guess.

Embed from Getty Images

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a big pair of pink-toned earrings last seen at the BAFTA Awards in 2016. There has been some question if these are costume pieces; I don't think so, particularly given their appearance here. These are in Kate's collection, not borrowed from The Queen.

As for the other guests: the Norwegian royal family posed for a photographer on their way to the party. That's about it so far. Car pictures all around! Typical of the Windsors, what can you say.

Armistice Centenary Service

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended the National Service to mark the centenary of the Armistice at Westminster Abbey, London.
BBC

The Queen was joined by the President of Germany at this evening's service, which the two began by laying fresh flowers at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

Westminster Abbey

The flowers, as you can see, were of bright colors to symbolize celebration at this armistice service, according to Westminster Abbey. (And for the flower lovers among you, the arrangement includes heather, gerbera, lilies, roses, and chrysanthemums.)

Fittingly, the black dress code we usually see for remembrance gave way to some more colorful attire from the Royal Family. The Queen used the Jardine Star Brooch to hold her poppies on her purple coat.

The Queen was joined by The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke of Kent, and Prince Michael of Kent for the Westminster Abbey service. Other members of the Royal Family were dispatched to services around the United Kingdom: The Duke of York was in Belfast, The Earl and Countess of Wessex were in Cardiff, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence were in Glasgow.

The Duchess of Cornwall joined The Queen in purple attire, wearing her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings and the Poppy Collection Women of the First World War Brooch. Her pearl choker is a newer addition to her collection and one we haven't yet covered.

Westminster Abbey

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated her green Catherine Walker coat and added a green velvet Jane Taylor headband. She wore a crystal poppy brooch and her pearl earrings from this morning.

Westminster Abbey

The Duchess of Sussex joined her husband in the navy suit club with her elegant skirt suit choice. I like her nice big poppy - especially since some were complaining that they couldn't see the poppy she wore at the Festival of Remembrance.

And with that, we cap off a very busy two days of remembrance for the Royal Family.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.
BBC

As she did last year, The Queen watched the Cenotaph ceremony from one of the Foreign Office balconies while The Prince of Wales laid  her wreath. This year she broke with her tradition of wearing one of her bow brooches to hold her cluster of poppies. She wore The Queen Mother's Shell Brooch instead. The jewelry choices, frivolous as they may seem to discuss given the occasion, can often add additional insight. That is certainly the case with The Queen's brooch choice today.

Embed from Getty Images

We've seen The Queen wear pieces from her mother's collection multiple times for war remembrance events. In the year of the armistice centenary, choosing one of The Queen Mother's favorites seems an additional nod to the four Bowes-Lyon brothers that fought in the First World War, one of whom was killed in action.

This particular brooch offers yet more significance of its own; it was designed by Lord Courtauld-Thomson (its longer name is the Courtauld Thomson Scallop-shell Brooch), who was Chief Commissioner for the British Red Cross during the First World War. The jewel was made in 1919. (As always, full stories on jewel history can be found in the links below.)

The Queen was joined on her balcony The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her jewelry from last year's service; her badge belonged to The Queen Mother and is of special significance to Camilla because her late father served with the 12th Lancers.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore her Poppy Collection Women of the First World War Brooch and repeated pearl earrings by Cassandra Goad.

The Duchess of Sussex joined Frau Elke Büdenbender, wife of the German president, on another balcony. "Federal German President His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier laid a wreath on behalf of the German people. It is the first time since the Cenotaph was inaugurated in 1920 that a representative of Germany took part in the National Service of Remembrance and his attendance symbolises the peace and friendship that exists between our two countries today," according to the Ministry of Defence.

The Countess of Wessex was on another balcony with Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. She wore a Rifles badge, because she is Royal Colonel of the 5th Battalion. The Countess of Wessex Blog identified her ceramic poppy brooch; it was made by and given to her by the visually impaired students at St. Vincent's School. The students make these poppy brooches as a campaign to leave "a lasting legacy for those who lost their sight in the Great War." The Countess regularly supports charities for the blind and visually impaired. It's a personal cause for her since her daughter, Lady Louise, was born with an eye condition.

The Duke of Cambridge, The Duke of Sussex, The Duke of York, The Earl of Wessex, The Princess Royal, The Duke of Kent, and Prince Michael of Kent all laid wreaths as well. The Duke of Edinburgh's (who was not present at the ceremony today) was laid by his equerry, a Captain in the Grenadier Guards.

Festival of Remembrance

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

The Festival of Remembrance regularly warrants an upgrade to The Queen's usual jewel selections, and the year of the armistice centenary warrants the second appearance of the large Richmond Brooch for the year. (It was also worn to the Sussex wedding.) It's unusual to see it twice in a year, but it has been used to anchor The Queen's cluster of poppies for this event in the past.

BBC

She also wore Queen Alexandra's Wedding Earrings and a double strand of pearls.

Two Strand Pearl Necklace

Royal British Legion

Members of the Royal Family in attendance were The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, The Duke of York, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent, and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Embed from Getty Images

The Duchess of Cornwall continued to use her Poppy Collection Women of the First World War Brooch again, as she did throughout her recent African tour. She also wore her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings.

Embed from Getty Images

We can see from the stem that The Duchess of Cambridge has once again worn the Pearl and Diamond Leaf Brooch on loan from The Queen on her sleek Roland Mouret dress. She covered up the three pearl leaves with three poppies, which I thought was a clever twist. Her earrings are possibly another loan; from some angles, they look like the earrings from the Qatar Pearl and Diamond Demi-Parure. From other angles, not so much.

And finally, The Duchess of Sussex made her first appearance at this event in a repeated Stella McCartney coat. She was also wearing a poppy brooch.

State Visit from The Netherlands, State Banquet

The Queen and members of the Royal Family hosted a state banquet at Buckingham Palace for The King and Queen of The Netherlands during their State Visit to the United Kingdom.

We've done a deep dive on the Dutch state banquet at the other blog already; here, as we do, we'll take a specific look at the things that emerged from The Queen's jewel vault. Her Maj returned to her favorite tiara, the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, for the second time this year; Queen Mary's Cluster Earrings also made their second appearance of the year.

Screencap

Another second 2018 showing? The massive Cullinan III and IV Brooch. That's a brooch chosen to honor the Dutch connection; the Cullinan Diamond was cut by Asscher in Amsterdam.

It's difficult to be out-blinged when one is wearing 158 carats of "Granny's Chips", but one should never underestimate the carat capacity of Queen Máxima. She wore the Stuart Tiara in all its glory.

The Duchess of Cornwall still favors the same white dress strategy as her mother-in-law; we've seen this one a few times in the past. She did manage to break up her diamonds and pearls with my favorite pink topaz.

The most exciting jewel news - on the British side of things - came from The Duchess of Cambridge. This is the first we've seen Queen Alexandra's Wedding Necklace since Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother wore it (it was one of her favorites). We also now know that The Duchess of Cambridge has been given Her Maj's royal family order. The gift, which is private and only known when the recipient wears the brooch, was first worn for the 2017 Diplomatic Reception (we just didn't get to see it in the car shots). Because these orders have been made with ivory in the past, it was also clarified that Kate's has been made using glass. (The Duke of Cambridge, as you may know, is very publicly against ivory.)

The Countess of Wessex wore the Five Aquamarine Tiara on loan from The Queen. Her earrings are very large and very sparkly (with a shape similar to The Queen's Emerald or Diamond Pendants), but I don't know if they are also loans at this time.

Again, you can see more from this banquet at Order of Splendor.

The Wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and other Members of The Royal Family attended the wedding of Princess Eugenie of York and Mr. Jack Brooksbank at St. George's Chapel, Windsor.

The Queen picked a Stewart Parvin ice blue cashmere coat with diamanté buttons and a coordinating blue, peach and gold dress for her granddaughter's wedding today, paired with a matching Angela Kelly hat. Plus a very dapper Duke by her side, of course!

Royal Family screencap

While I always hope big family occasions will bring us something rare in the brooch department, you also can't really complain about an 18.8 carat Cullinan chip. And the Cullinan V was certainly sparkling like crazy in the lights today. Yummy. (The earrings are looking a little bigger to me - will need to seek out some more pics later for confirmation.)

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

Royal Family screencap

Another wedding also brings about another surprise tiara loan! The Queen loaned Princess Eugenie the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, a piece which was obviously part of the Greville bequest but which has not been seen on a member of the Royal Family prior to today. It's one many have been waiting anxiously to see!

This is the first time we've seen Eugenie in a tiara and I believe the first time we've seen her wear jewelry loaned from her grandmother. The earrings were a gift from the groom. The green details are stunning on her!

We also had a loan on The Duchess of Cambridge, who wore The Queen's Diamond Pendant Earrings again.

P.S.: The Queen did have an investiture yesterday. Of course, I've yet to see evidence of the brooch, so I didn't cover it separately.

Balmoral Holiday, 2018

By Nick Bramhall from Aberdeen, UK - Balmoral Castle Uploaded by Kurpfalzbilder.de, CC BY-SA 2.0

The Queen started her annual summer Balmoral holiday on July 19. She stayed at Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate while the castle was still open to the public as she usually does, followed by taking up official residence at the castle itself on August 6. Her break usually ends around late September/early October with an engagement or two in Scotland before heading south.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

***********

October 7: NEW! As she wraps up her Balmoral break, Her Maj jumps straight from summer to winter with her fur-trimmed red outfit. Both the Gold Trellis Brooch and Lady Sarah Chatto accompanied her to church today.

September 30: The Sapphire and Diamond Grapes Brooch shows up at church as blue continues to be the color of the summer.

September 23: The Diamond and Pearl Navette Brooch makes another church appearance. In other Balmoral news, The Queen was spotted checking in on some horses, and unfortunately one of her ladies-in-waiting, The Hon. Mary Morrison, broke her ankle in a fall at the castle. [Express, Hello]

September 16: Another church brooch that needs no debate: the Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch.

September 9: Church again and hmm, interesting, this kinda looks like a badge to me. We'll see what you think. Here's a gallery for your investigation. [Zimbio]

September 2: The Cullinan V Brooch stands out beautifully on this navy coat for another Sunday at Crathie Kirk.

September 1: The annual Braemar Gathering has its own post right here.

August 26: More members of the Royal Family have arrived at Balmoral. The Queen, wearing the Pearl Navette Brooch, was joined in her car for church by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings on loan from The Queen. [Evening Standard]

August 19: A good effort from the Pearl Trefoil Brooch here, trying to stand out on this beige tweed for another Sunday church outing.

August 12: It's about time for a thistle brooch. The Three Thistle Brooch was worn to church at Balmoral. Princess Beatrice accompanied her grandmother, wearing a fabulous Garbo hat. [People, Sun]

August 6: The Queen starts her official residency at Balmoral Castle with the traditional welcome ceremony. This always includes inspecting a Royal Guard, so of course the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge was the pick.

August 5: Church at Balmoral, and if history's an indication, not the first time this summer the brooch will be tough to identify.

July 29: Church at Crathie Kirk near the Balmoral estate, her place of worship while in residence, wearing the Jardine Star Brooch. [Hello]
