2019: The Year in The Queen's Jewels

'Tis the season once again, friends. Not the holiday season, no, but the season to wrap up The Queen’s year in jewels with a look back at 2019’s favorite brooches, tiara appearances, loans, and more. (You'll find all previous years linked here, on the In-Depth Features & Lists page.)

The Most Popular Brooches
The Queen wore more than 50 identifiable brooches in 2019, a tally which is certainly larger in reality than we can count here because this only includes those events which are a) cataloged here and b) featured an identifiable brooch.

All of this year's favorites have appeared on these lists before. It was a very colorful year, though; with the exception of 2013, when the Amethyst Bouquet Brooch tied with the Frosted Sunflower Brooch at number one, this is the first time in my counting that the top of the list has been taken by colorful gemstones.

The Jewel Debuts
Royal Family
While 2019 brought us some fun rare brooch appearances (the Aquamarine Bar Brooch, the two small Nizam of Hyderabad Rose Brooches, the Queen Mother's Ruby and Diamond Bouquet Brooch), we had only one real brooch first: the Pink and Black Paisley Brooch, debuted during Holyrood Week.

Of course, that little brooch was overshadowed by the time Her Maj rolled out the year's biggest surprise: THAT NECKLACE, worn to the Diplomatic Reception. (Which, yes I know, we haven't done an in-depth post on yet.)

The Tiara Appearances

The use of the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara with emeralds for the Diplomatic Reception capped what was also a colorful tiara year. The Burmese Ruby Tiara was seen in action for the first time since this site began for the summer's state visit. We also saw the George IV State Diadem at October's formal State Opening of Parliament.

The Loans
Royal Family
The Diamond Chandelier Drop Demi-Parure was added to the list of loaner jewels this year, first apparently on The Countess of Wessex at the US state banquet, and then the earrings on The Duchess of Cambridge at the Diplomatic Reception. The Countess of Wessex also had her loaner wedding tiara altered for the state banquet. Angela Kelly confirmed what our eyes could see in her book The Other Side of the Coin, adding that the alterations were completed by G. Collins & Sons.

This year also brought us another Windsor wedding, some extra royals for Garter Day, and more! What was your favorite bejeweled moment of 2019?

Christmas Service and Christmas Broadcast, 2019

Happy holidays to you all! The Queen brought us a rare brooch as a Christmas present, wasn't that nice of her? This is from The Queen Mother and it's only been worn a few times by The Queen - and not since 2015.

A healthy dose of purple was on display among some of the family members accompanying The Queen, much to my delight. The Princess Royal and The Duchess of Cornwall coordinated in grape...

Embed from Getty Images

...and The Countess of Snowdon played along, too. I am always here for a jaunty purple hat.

As for everybody else, well, let the parade of neutral coats begin:

A little faux fur trim takes a basic coat a long way down the road to chic. (The focus here was really on Prince George and Princess Charlotte anyway, making their Sandringham church debut.)

Embed from Getty Images

We've got serviceable looks from the Wessex ladies...

Embed from Getty Images

...and a serviceable look for Princess Eugenie, too. I do wish she wouldn't have waited until all the way down at the heels of her shoes to add some interest.

This coat is incredibly flattering on Princess Beatrice, and deserving of something more polished than those boots and something more coordinated than that headpiece.

The Queen's annual message was broadcast on Christmas Day.

And finally, a nice big sapphire for the annual Christmas broadcast. You can watch this year's message below.

Bit of a mixed bag outfit for The Countess of Wessex there - but a perfect Christmas-y green for Her Maj with yet another look at one of those Cambridge emeralds.

Royal British Legion's Together at Christmas Launch

Earlier this week: The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, and Prince George prepared special Christmas puddings in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace, as part of the launch of The Royal British Legion's Together at Christmas initiative.

I definitely bake my Christmas treats in my Music Room with my purse on my arm, don't you? In front of a Christmas tree decked out with replica crowns and corgi ornaments, no less.

I love these little images, though - adorable and such a festive change of pace from the usual events! This bit of merrymaking occurred on Wednesday, when the family gathered for The Queen's annual Christmas luncheon, and there's more to come: footage was taken to air during this year's Christmas broadcast.

The Queen went one way and The Duke of Edinburgh went the other way, traveling from Sandringham to London to be admitted to the hospital as a "precautionary measure" for a pre-existing condition, according to the palace. He's expected to be there for a few days and we wish him a fast recovery.

Between squeezing this in before The Queen leaves for Sandringham and the fact that they just did another one a couple months ago, today's State Opening was a "dressed down" version like 2017, with a car instead of a carriage and day dress instead of the whole sparkly deal. This State Opening didn't even warrant a new outfit, although Her Maj did repeat the Cullinan brooch she wore to the 2017 opening.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

A change of room scenery and a change of brooch scenery! We most often get pictures of The Queen receiving credentials from ambassadors in the 1844 Room (as pictured last week, for example), but she shook it up today in the White Drawing Room. You can see a 360° view on the Royal Family site here (where it does say that this is a room regularly used for these types of audiences, so fair enough). Today's brooch selection is the Grima Ruby, last seen in the 2018 Christmas broadcast.

The 2019 Diplomatic Reception and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen hosted the annual Diplomatic Reception for ambassadors at Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of Cambridge, and The Duchess of Cambridge were also present.

Oh, we're feasting today, friends. The annual Diplomatic Reception has brought us not just tiaras but surprises beginning with THIS. NECKLACE. This is a debut for The Queen! The base looks similar to the Greville Emerald Necklace worn by The Queen Mother, though the diamonds surrounding the emeralds appear different (granted, pictures of the Greville Emerald Necklace are sparse). The necklace is adorned with emerald and diamond pendants that coordinate perfectly with the emerald option of her Vladimir Tiara. This necklace may likely be another piece from the Greville bequest; Mrs. Greville was at times reported to have more than one emerald necklace.

The Queen is also wearing the Greville Emerald Earrings, often The Queen Mother's choice to go with the Greville Emerald Necklace. It's not the first time The Queen has worn them (we haven't covered them yet, but we will).

The Queen's full jewel list:

The Duchess of Cornwall was  up to her usual tricks, wearing a favorite repeated Bruce Oldfield gown and a set of favorite jewels.

To go with her navy velvet Alexander McQueen gown (LOVE, of course - I am a confessed lover of a great velvet gown), The Duchess of Cambridge borrowed a bunch of exciting pieces. She wore the Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace again and a new-to-her pair of earrings from the Diamond Chandelier Chandelier Drop Demi-Parure, the same set The Countess of Wessex appeared to wear at the state banquet earlier this year.

The Duchess is also wearing a a second large ring in addition to her engagement ring.

NATO Leaders Reception and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for Heads of State and Government of NATO countries to mark 70 years of the Alliance.

Folks, we've got a three brooch day on our hands. #1: The Palm Leaf Brooch accented the scarf on Her Maj's outfit for the evening reception.

#2: The Jardine Star came along for a private audience with the NATO Secretary General.

And #3: I thought this would be the same because the outfit is the same, but if you can make it out, it's yet another one! The Maple Leaf Brooch handled the other audience duties for the day.

Let's bop back to the NATO reception for a second before we go, because there were other family members with more gems...

Naturally, one of The Duchess of Cornwall's favorite (and signature) pearl chokers was her pick for the event.

The Duchess of Cambridge leaned into the evening side of things with the Diamond Pendant Earrings on loan again from The Queen.

The Duchess of Gloucester was right there with her with emerald earrings and a necklace of pearls and emeralds, part of a set originating with Queen Alexandra that was later worn and altered by Queen Mary and Princess Alice.

And finally, it looks like The Princess Royal selected her Grima pearl earrings.

The fifth appearance for this emerald this year, and the first without the pendant. I'll take that pro-pendant ratio.

She was flanked on the balcony by The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge, both wearing brooches of significance. The Duchess of Cornwall wore the badge of the 9/12th Lancers, a piece that belonged to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and is selected by Camilla because her late father was a member of the 12th Lancers. The Duchess of Cambridge's brooch is the Codebreakers poppy brooch from the Royal British Legion, honoring those that worked in signal intelligence; her grandmother and great-aunt worked at the Bletchley Park code-breaking facility during World War II. She also wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings on loan from The Queen.

On another balcony, The Countess of Wessex wore her Rifles Badge (she is the Royal Colonel of the 5th Battalion) with a poppy brooch, while simple poppies graced both The Duchess of Sussex and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

And down on the ground, The Prince of Wales led the rest of the family in laying their wreaths at the base of the Cenotaph.

I'm short on time tonight so I won't do a full run through of all the family members, except to say that I noted The Duchess of Cambridge wearing the Silver Jubilee Diamond and Pearl Earrings that she has loaned from The Queen in the past.
