Visit from The King and Queen of Tonga

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh received The King and Queen of Tonga at Windsor Castle. Their Majesties stayed for tea.
It may look like a spare button on this particular dress, but we have a debut on our hands: it's the FEI Lifetime Achievement Award Brooch! This is the first time we've seen it in use since it was presented to her in November. Not a bad size to wear for engagements at home, really.

Magna Carta Anniversary Reception

The Queen, with The Duke of Edinburgh, hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace marking the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

This orange red feels like a nice spot of brightness after a series of blues, no? I like the shake up with the tiers on the skirt, too. And the Jardine Star is the brooch of the month, making its second appearance.

Canada House Reopening

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh reopened Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London, following the building's renovation.

No maple leaf brooches, alas...but, in an effort to explain that chapeau, I have decided she's paying a hat brim tribute to the Mounties. (Not my fave, can you tell?)

Diabetes UK Reception and Audiences

The Queen hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the 80th anniversary of Diabetes UK. Earlier, she held several audiences.

Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry

The Queen received the winner of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, Imtiaz Dharker, at Buckingham Palace.

Difficult to see as always, but it looks like the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch (without pendant) is continuing its resurgence in the brooch stakes.

Wessex Birthday Reception

The Queen hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for the patronages and affiliations of The Earl and Countess of Wessex, in honor of their joint 50th birthdays. The Duke of York was also present.

Return to London

The Queen departed King's Lynn via train at the end of her Sandringham break.
Sans a coat brooch, Her Maj returned to London today, ready to get back to work. The flag is flying and all systems are go...

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended church at Sandringham.

The Queen entered her 63rd year on the throne this week, marking the anniversary of her accession as she usually does, by spending it quietly at Sandringham. I really wasn't surprised to read today that so far, she plans to celebrate the day she becomes the longest reigning monarch in British history (September 9, 2015) in a similarly low-key fashion, at Balmoral. Much more her style.

King's Lynn Fire Station Opening

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, opened a new fire station in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Karl Ludwig fur-trimmed coat and Philip Somerville hat today, very elegant. And since she was still partially in holiday break mode near Sandringham, we saw her less formal option of a double strand of pearls and simple pearl stud earrings.
The Jardine Star Brooch also made the appearance. Usually one of the favorites, the star was only seen three times last year. Perhaps it is getting an early start on this year's competition.

Church in Norfolk

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended church at West Newton during their Sandringham break.

How very perfect: Church at West Newton on February 2, 2014 was the very first public outing of the Saskatchewan Tourmaline Flower Brooch, and here we are again! I'm also loving this close up of something we don't usually pay attention to, her bejeweled hat pins:
This particular pin is shown in Angela Kelly's book Dressing the Queen, where it is explained that most of The Queen's hat pins are made to match her hats and she has just a few favorite "feature hat pins, made of gold or decorated with diamonds and moonstones." This is in contrast to Queen Mary, who had a large collection of showy hat pins in her wardrobe. I love the whole Olympic torch feel going on with this one. Very triumphant.
