Windsor Grey Statue Unveiling

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of Cambridge, unveiled a statue of two Windsor Grey horses to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, in Windsor.

I love it when they have a bit of a family outing! But it's not a random selection from the grandkids, of course - William was patron of the fundraising appeal for the statue.

Visit to the City of London

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh undertook a day of engagements in the City of London, attending a reception to mark the 800th anniversary of the Royal Watermen at Watermen's Hall and then visiting Lloyds of London to commemorate the market's 325th anniversary.
I've said it once, now I'll say it twice: Ye Olde Cambridge Pearl looks so lonely without its pendant. I'm not sure I love that, but I do love this:

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

UPDATE: The following day, March 28, the Queen held an investiture, but per usual it seems no brooch was to be glimpsed.

This is a little tough to see, but we have another appearance for the Women of Hampshire Brooch! So lovely to see this one back in the rotation...and it would be even lovelier to see it at an engagement when it can be viewed properly (hint, hint).

Irish Community Reception and Audiences

The Queen, together with other members of the Royal Family, hosted a reception for members of the Irish community at Buckingham Palace.

Big news: Her Majesty met one of the One Direction people. (I'm sure she could hardly contain herself.) But no, here's the big news that matters to this blog: she gave us a second outing of the diamond and emerald Shamrock Brooch! Huzzah. It was last seen in 2012 during her visit to Northern Ireland, so she's sticking strictly to her theme. Unfortunately, it's not a fantastic match to a patterned suit - just a little too delicate to be recognized.
The reception was held because the Irish president is arriving for a state visit on April 8th. Perhaps we'll get another look at the Irish Silver Spiral Brooch from her 2011 Irish visit?

Engagement and Wedding Rings

Also today... The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace, receiving the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador plus a new recipient of the Order of Merit. It was purple heaven - click here for a gallery.

Rambert Dance Visit and Lieutenant Governor Reception

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the new headquarters building of the Rambert dance company, South Bank, London.
A vibrant shade of pink to welcome spring, I'm good with that.

And yesterday... The couple held a reception for the Lieutenant Governors of the Crown Dependencies at Buckingham Palace. Click here for a gallery - yet another favorite brooch on display, the Pearl Trefoil.

The Opal Spray Brooch

The Opal Spray Brooch
A little-known and not often used piece in the Queen's collection, this brooch uses a stone that she doesn't frequently choose: opals, black opals with gold specifically, in the design of a spray of flowering gum. By their very nature, the opals generate an array of colors, particularly when viewed at different angles. The brooch comes from Australia - not surprising, as this is their signature stone. It was a wedding present to the Queen (Princess Elizabeth, as she was then) in 1947 from the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmens Imperial League of Australia. The official wedding gift list notes that the brooch's casket bears the badge of the league in gold.
The Queen appropriately wore the brooch during a visit to Australia in 2000 and it has made a couple recent appearances, though it is still a rare brooch to see in use.

Appearances:
14 March 2016: Commonwealth Day Service
16 July 2015: Visit to Barking and Dagenham
18 March 2014: Audiences at Buckingham Palace
15 October 2013: MP and MEP Reception

Thanks to commenter adca for additional appearance information, and to Gill for confirmation!

Back to standards after yesterday's intrigue, alas. I think this is now the standard audience brooch, check out the list of appearances in the brooch page linked below...

The Triple Diamond Bar Brooch

The Triple Diamond Bar Brooch
This brooch includes three large emerald-cut diamonds in the center and two half moon-cut diamonds on either side, all enclosed in a double row diamond outline. The provenance of the brooch is unconfirmed, but the likely answer is that the design was created from loose diamonds received as a gift while The Queen, as Princess Elizabeth, was in South Africa in 1947.*

Princess Elizabeth receiving the diamonds thought to be used in the Triple Diamond Bar Brooch, 1947
British Pathé
The diamonds, which were mined in South Africa, were given to the Princess when she opened the Princess Elizabeth Graving Dock in East London, South Africa, on March 3, 1947. The gift came from the South African Railways and Harbors Administration and was presented by Mrs. Sturrock, wife of the Transport Minister. "They are the most magnificent ones, aren't they," Princess Elizabeth can be overheard saying in this video as she receives the box and opens it to examine the diamonds inside.

Royal Family
Despite the diamonds potentially entering The Queen's collection decades earlier, this brooch was not debuted publicly until the Commonwealth Day reception in 2014 - a fitting occasion, assuming that provenance is correct. It has made multiple appearances since then.

*Thanks to research from the posters at the Royal Jewels of the World Message Board, and thanks to Jelena for bringing attention to it here.

Royal Holloway Visit

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Royal Holloway, University of London in Egham, Surrey.
What a lovely surprise to end the week - one of the Queen's less frequently seen wedding presents, the Carrington Sapphire Feather Brooch. We haven't seen it in active use since the blog began!

Visit from King Philippe and Queen Mathilde

The Queen received the King and Queen of the Belgians at Buckingham Palace and hosted a private lunch attended by other members of the Royal Family. The visit is part of a series of official introductory visits made by the new Belgian sovereign couple to other countries.

You know it's a comfortable visit when the dogs are on the loose! And both queens stayed well within their comfort zones: the Flower Basket Brooch for Elizabeth and another Natan ensemble (with her favorite collar style) for Mathilde. Mathilde's looking great, but this also strikes me as nothing really notable from her - feels like an outfit we've seen a hundred times.

Her brooch is not on straight, and it's weirding me out. A mistake, or intentional?

And finally: Prince Edward is celebrating his 50th birthday. Where there are celebs, there are brooch pictures - at least when it comes to normally ignored investitures, that's the case. Today's glimpse of the favorite Flower Basket comes courtesy of Penelope Keith, who is now Dame Penelope, and Michael Crawford, who now has his CBE.

Flashback: State Visit to Vatican City, 1980

In October 1980, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh finished a state visit to Italy with a state visit to Vatican City to visit Pope John Paul II. As mentioned when we covered their Vatican visit from 2000, going back in time marks a return to an extremely formal Vatican protocol, including a long dress in all black, with orders and a tiara to keep the veil/mantilla in place. The tiara of choice in 1980 was the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, not the first time that tiara was used with a veil given its origin at the Russian court. She used the pearl drops on the tiara and accessorized the rest of her look with pearls and diamonds, including the Ladies of Devonshire Earrings, what looks to be a three strand pearl necklace, a pearl bracelet, and an evening watch. In addition to her family orders, she wore the Order of the Garter Star, Riband, and Lesser George - plus a rare sight, the actual Garter from the order, there on her arm. For a video from this trip and a glimpse at this supremely formal Queen, click here.
