Opening Ceremony of the London Paralympic Games

The Queen, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, officially opened the London Paralympic Games.
Well, that settles it: I'm going to be disappointed every time she rolls up without a movie star or a parachute from now on.

Church at Balmoral

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, attended services at Crathie Church during her annual Balmoral break.
While everyone else talks about how this was the Duke of Edinburgh's first appearance since his release from the hospital, let's talk about the brooch: a stag. Hmm. How very Balmoral!

The Gold Stag Brooch

The Gold Stag Brooch
The Queen has brooches that are more generic in form and those that are quite specific, depicting symbols or items. One such specific brooch is this gold number in the shape of a stag. I'm not aware of a publicly known provenance for this brooch, but with such a design and its use at Balmoral, a guess of a gift from an organization related to the country or hunting or perhaps a family member might be logical.

Good hat. No clue what that brooch might be, but good hat.

New Brooch Alert: It seems the Queen has yet another Jubilee present coming her way, in the form of another brooch for her collection. The British Jewellers’ Association is putting on a competition to find the best design to use donated gold from around the United Kingdom. Click here to read more about the competition; a link within the article will allow you to view and vote on the potential designs. Which is your favorite?

Later this week, Prince Philip was taken to the hospital from for a recurrence of the bladder infection that brought him down earlier this summer. Get well soon, Phil!
