RAF Regiment Portrait Presentation

At Windsor Castle, The Queen viewed a new portrait commissioned by the RAF Regiment to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The Queen, Air Commodore in Chief of the RAF Regiment, was painted by artist Stuart Brown in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.

Her Maj in Windsor mode, with a double strand of pearls. (Tough to tell if she's wearing her usual earrings here; sometimes she goes for pearl studs instead.) And there's something of a double brooch situation: the Pearl Trefoil in real life and an RAF Regiment Badge in the painting. That brooch was presented to her by the regiment and shows the Astral Crown and crossed Lee Enfield rifles.

Festival of Remembrance

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

The Festival of Remembrance regularly warrants an upgrade to The Queen's usual jewel selections, and the year of the armistice centenary warrants the second appearance of the large Richmond Brooch for the year. (It was also worn to the Sussex wedding.) It's unusual to see it twice in a year, but it has been used to anchor The Queen's cluster of poppies for this event in the past.

Members of the Royal Family in attendance were The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, The Duke of York, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent, and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

The Duchess of Cornwall continued to use her Poppy Collection Women of the First World War Brooch again, as she did throughout her recent African tour. She also wore her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings.

We can see from the stem that The Duchess of Cambridge has once again worn the Pearl and Diamond Leaf Brooch on loan from The Queen on her sleek Roland Mouret dress. She covered up the three pearl leaves with three poppies, which I thought was a clever twist. Her earrings are possibly another loan; from some angles, they look like the earrings from the Qatar Pearl and Diamond Demi-Parure. From other angles, not so much.

And finally, The Duchess of Sussex made her first appearance at this event in a repeated Stella McCartney coat. She was also wearing a poppy brooch.

Royal Windsor Horse Show

May 9-13: The Queen attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show at Home Park, Windsor.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show is mainly an opportunity to see The Queen in casual mode - this year's casual outfits included a Two Strand Pearl Necklace, Pearl Stud Earrings, one of her Black Strap Watches, and her Engagement and Wedding Rings - but a few brooches also manage to get in on the action.

The Braemar Gathering

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of Rothesay, and The Princess Royal, attended the annual Braemar Gathering in Scotland.

Dinner at The Ivy

May 18: The Queen attended a private dinner at The Ivy restaurant, London, to celebrate a friend's birthday.

Party time! Her Maj looked lovely in her wrap for a rare night out, and - happily, for us - she made sure she didn't forget her jewels at home: big ruby and diamond earrings from Queen Mary, a double strand of pearls, fabulous bracelets, and a plethora of diamond rings.  People often think that she doesn't wear many rings, apart from her usual engagement and wedding set, but that's not really true. She's actually prone to adding several rings at a time for evening engagements. We just usually see her with evening gloves, so this goes unnoticed.


The Queen left carrying a custom purse with a photo on it. Though reports said at first the image was of Princess Margaret (as the above headline indicates), it turns out it's actually a portrait of Archduchess Helen of Austria, the birthday girl in question. Archduchess Helen was celebrating her 80th birthday and these were given to the guests.

Audience at Windsor Castle

The Queen received the President of Guyana for a private audience at Windsor Castle.

That's not a bad view they've got there, eh? The Queen is in her more "casual" pearls, as she often is at Windsor, with a brooch we saw four times last year (and yet I still didn't think we'd seen it in a long time. Must not be making much of an impression...).

Motability 40th Anniversary Ceremony

The Queen, Patron, hosted a ceremony at Windsor Castle to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Motability, a charity providing vehicles to disabled people and their families.

The Queen presented keys to new vehicles to some families as part of this event, which I assume she managed to do without shouting "You get a car! You get a car!", as I most certainly would have done.

Royal Windsor Horse Show

The Queen attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show at Home Park, Windsor.

As usual, The Queen went casual for a few days to browse around the Royal Windsor Horse Show, where she looked just as entertained as we all are that her prize for a winning horse was a Tesco gift card. Just what she needed!

She was also spotted the following day (Friday), again in casual mode with her engagement and wedding Rings and one of her casual watches.

The RWHS usually brings a brooch or two as well.

To present the King's Cup to American show jumper Kent Farrington, a brooch we haven't seen in three years came out of hiding: the Gold Lace Work Brooch, worn alongside her Pearl Stud Earrings and a double strand of pearls.

Audience at Windsor Castle

The Queen received the Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Rodney Williams, at Windsor Castle for a private audience.
Another look inside The Queen's private sitting room at Windsor, fresh for your analysis! You'll remember this is where she had her cozy audience with the New Zealand Prime Minister last month, and now we have a little different angle. That red carpet just takes a room right over, no?

Festival of Remembrance

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
I love when The Queen uses the Festival of Remembrance as a chance to wear a rare jewel, because it feels like an extra special tribute. She delivered this year with Queen Alexandra's Wedding Brooch, which reappeared in 2014 after not being seen for over forty years. She also wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings for the first time in a long time; they were last seen loaned to The Countess of Wessex. Adding to her pearl look were a double strand of large pearls, and her Pearl Evening Watch (which looks like it has shorter fringes around the face this time, but that could just be the angle). Her Majesty also wore a few additional diamond rings, as she often does in the evening.

This was the first appearance at the Festival of Remembrance for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a welcome addition to the royal party with The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall currently in New Zealand.


Your requisite fashion notes: The Duchess of Cambridge wore black Dolce & Gabbana lace with a crystal poppy pin. The Countess of Wessex wore Roksanda Ilincic with a poppy clutch from Lulu Guinness and the badge of Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, of which she is Colonel-in-Chief, and her own crystal poppy pin. The Buckley London poppy brooches worn by both royal ladies help support the Royal British Legion, so I'm always happy to see them given a little extra royal publicity.

Audience at Windsor Castle

The Queen received the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, at Windsor Castle for a private audience.
Oh, I like this style of audience photo! It's a nice change, right? Dogs milling about (you can see the full set in the gallery link above), Her Maj with her more "casual" set of pearls. So cozy! She's also wearing the Gold Trellis Brooch, which we've only seen for October appearances for three years running.

Balmoral Holiday, 2015

The Queen has been at Balmoral for about two weeks, staying at another property on the estate while the castle was still open for visitors. Today, August 10, was her official arrival at the Balmoral Castle, and with that, we'll start our official Balmoral Holiday post for the year.

As we did last year, sightings of Her Maj while on her Scottish estate will be collected here throughout her break. You can find a link for this post on the sidebar under Recently Updated Events. The link will tell you the last time the post was updated.

  • August 19: The Sons of Scotland Pipe Band played at Balmoral for The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Countess of Wessex, and Lady Louise Windsor. Her Majesty was in casual mode for the private performance (read: no jewels on display), but you can read all about it at The Countess of Wessex Blog.
  • September 5: As always, The Queen attended the annual Braemar Gathering.
  • September 6: Attending Sunday service at Crathie Church, Her Maj played to her Scottish location with the Three Thistle Brooch:
  • September 13: The Queen accepted an invitation to the FEI European Eventing Championship at Blair Castle, where she presented medals. No brooch, not unusual for this houndstooth coat:

Royal Windsor Horse Show 2015

The Queen makes several informal visits to the Royal Windsor Horse Show on the private grounds at Windsor Castle during the show's duration (13-17 May this year). Appearances at this year's show will be compiled in this entry, which will be updated as the week goes on.

May 13

Opening day brought both The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall out to play. Pearl stud earrings, a double strand of pearls, engagement and wedding rings, and a leather strap watch with a round face for HM; Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings, Gold Chain Bracelet with Multi-Color Stones, Cross and Eye Chain Bracelet, a watch, and engagement and wedding rings on show for HRH.


May 15

Not much to show for jewels today, but a jolly day with extra appearances by The Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise, plus The Duke of York and The King of Bahrain.

May 16

Another standard appearance in the day. The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch came out later for award presentations, and a longer double strand of pearls for the evening event.

May 17
And finally, she presented more prizes wearing Queen Victoria's 11 Pearl Brooch.

King's Lynn Fire Station Opening

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, opened a new fire station in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Karl Ludwig fur-trimmed coat and Philip Somerville hat today, very elegant. And since she was still partially in holiday break mode near Sandringham, we saw her less formal option of a double strand of pearls and simple pearl stud earrings.
The Jardine Star Brooch also made the appearance. Usually one of the favorites, the star was only seen three times last year. Perhaps it is getting an early start on this year's competition.

Christmas Service and Christmas Broadcast, 2014

A very merry Christmas to you all! Here's Her Maj's present for you: another look at the Tudor Rose Brooch, which first appeared in 2012. I'm not a huge fan of that brooch on this particular color coat (though my love for HM in brights never ceases), but I love that it serves as something of a symbol of this year of unusual brooch selections. (Stick around for our year in review post here, which goes up on the 31st! It's going to be a doozy. Also, we'll be covering other family members at the service on the other blog later on.)

The Queen talks much about this year of remembrance, including the centenary of World War I. The photos on the table are of her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, who were king and queen back in 1914, and the brass box sitting in front would have been filled with presents for the troops back then as part of an effort organized by their daughter, Princess Mary.
Her selection of a brooch which came to her via Queen Mary has a bit of additional significance in that context. The Cambridge Pearl Pendant has made several appearances in Christmas broadcasts past, most recently appearing in 2012 and 2004. She's gone slightly fancier for this occasion, abandoning her usual earrings and triple strand of pearls for the larger version of those earrings, also from Queen Mary, and a longer double strand of pearls (as you'll see from the post linked below, I rarely attempt to differentiate between her many, many pearl necklaces). Very elegant, and on a final and tremendously superficial note...bonus points from me for a purple outfit and purple ornaments to match!

Festival of Remembrance

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

It is nice to see a brooch with its optional pendant back in place for a change, but I'm not sure the Richmond Brooch was up for the task of handling Her Majesty's poppy bouquet - things had been rearranged between arrival (above) and the show (below).
It does look like this is the first time this has been used since this blog's been around, so that's delightful anyway!

As always, a whole host of members of the royal family were present: The Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke of York, Earl and Countess of Wessex, Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael of Kent can all be seen below.
A couple of the ladies were wearing regimental brooches, the Duchess of Cornwall wore her diamond snake necklace, and Princess Alexandra had a lovely brooch on too.

Northern Ireland Reception, New Zealand Portrait, and Organ Recital

Lots and lots going on. A triple event update:

As part of the ongoing State Visit from Ireland, the Queen hosted a Northern Ireland-themed reception at Windsor Castle which was attended by President and Mrs. Higgins.

This is unusual: Her Majesty normally participates in the welcome, state banquet, and farewell of a state visit these days, without extra events, so this certainly speaks to the importance placed on this particular visit. She's wearing the Jardine Star Brooch - usually a favorite, but hasn't been seen since last November!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world... 
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a new portrait of the Queen by New Zealand artist Nick Cuthell. The portrait was commissioned by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, and it will become a part of their permanent collection. The Queen sat for this portrait in October 2013.
A casual portrait in her standard day wear, but of course she is sporting the New Zealand brooch most recently loaned to the Duchess (and the Duchess echoed that fern motif with her Jenny Packham gown; click here for another article with photos). Prince William even made mention of the fern jewel in his speech, saying that "Her Majesty is portrayed wearing her silver fern brooch, which provides a simple but clear reminder of Her Majesty's deep affection for the people of New Zealand." So that's all kinds of aww.

And yesterday... 
On April 9, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a recital to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Royal College of Organists at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

She took a break from the Irish state visit for a regular engagement, and she took a break from the jewel intrigue, too, returning to her favorite Frosted Sunflower Brooch. But continuing in her trend of doing something a bit out of the ordinary, she opted for a double strand of pearls instead of her typical triple strand and a simple single pearl stud earring instead of her usual pearl and diamond combo. Oooh.

Flashback: Christmas Broadcasts

The Queen's annual Christmas message, broadcast on Christmas Day, is a tradition dating back to George V. Her first address was a simple radio broadcast from Sandringham in 1952; by 2013, she was filming her television address in 3D for the first time. Though our flashback does not include every year, there is only one year in which there was no Christmas message: 1969, when the documentary Royal Family was shown instead.

This flashback focuses primarily on the brooches worn by the Queen, though there is variety in necklaces and earrings here too (particularly in the earlier years). She's worn many different brooches over the years, but the most popular ones are also pretty popular elsewhere: the Pearl Trefoil, Cambridge Pearl Pendant, and Cullinan V Brooches.

National Theatre Anniversary

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the National Theatre, South Bank, London, to celebrate the institution's 50th anniversary.

I confess, when I saw pink from a distance, I wondered if the new Saskatchewan brooch might be involved - but no, no, too soon. Oh well. Yay for pink jewels in any case!


UPDATE: The previous evening, the couple dined at the Cavalry and Guards Club, click here for pictures. With her sparkly gown, the Queen wore pearls: a two strand pearl necklace, plus one of her pearl strand bracelets (we've covered two here previously, the Pearl and Diamond Floral and Queen Mary's Pearl Bracelet, but there are more options and it's hard to tell which this is). There are earrings as well, of course, but they're hard to make out.
