Visit to Cambridge and Dersingham Village Center Opening

The Queen visited Cambridge for a day of engagements at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, Queen’s College, and Royal Papworth Hospital.
Royal Family

This visit has everything: a bonus royal, a dress showcase, a little brooch tidbit, and a monarch in sassy mode. The bonus royal is of course The Duchess of Gloucester, who joined in for visit to Royal Papworth Hospital because she is the hospital's Patron.

For those of you who like seeing the matching dresses underneath the coats, this visit offers you a good look at a bold take on her usual florals.

A brooch tidbit! The press notes this brooch is the "Singapore Shield" gold brooch, so now we know what the palace calls it. I've been calling it the Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch around here.

And finally, some 93-year-old sass: Offered assistance with a ceremonial tree planting, Her Maj replied, "No, no, I'm not too old to plant a tree."

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

July 5: The Queen officially opened the new village center in Dersingham, West Norfolk.

While at Sandringham this weekend, The Queen made what was billed as a private visit to Dersingham for an engagement. You can see a couple pictures here at Lynn News; the appearance marks the return of the Aquamarine Clips - favorites (former favorites?) that have been absent since March 2018.

May 11: The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch was paired with some other Windsor Castle staples, the Pearl Stud Earrings and a Single Strand Pearl Necklace.

May 12: Sometimes Her Maj ditches the pendant on the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch when her outfit color leans toward the teal end of things, but - needless to say - I'm always happier when the pendant's in place.

May 12: A sparkly jacket took the place of any brooch for the final pageant. The rest of her usual accessories were back in place on the last day.

Science Museum Visit

The Queen visited the Science Museum in London to announce its summer exhibition, "Top Secret", and to unveil the new Smith Centre.
Royal Family

We've now seen this orange outfit with three different brooches: the Australian Wattle, Queen Victoria's Bow, and today's Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch. The yellow tones (either the gold here or the yellow diamonds of the Wattle) are definitely my preference.

At milestone from today's visit: Her Maj posted on Instagram for the very first time. Try a cute dog pic next time, ma'am! That's what social media's really for.

Today, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert. Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the “Difference Engine”, of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843. In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention the “Analytical Engine” upon which the first computer programmes were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron. Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors. The Duke's back! And so's the Singapore brooch, which we haven't seen since last year's Balmoral break. I guess I'll have to continue my campaign to see a pearl brooch to go with those pearl buttons; she's already worn this outfit with the Singapore brooch and with the Botswana Flower.

Balmoral Holiday, 2017

By Stuart Yeates from Oxford, UK - Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0

The Queen started her annual summer Balmoral holiday in July at Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate, while the castle was still open to the public, followed by taking up official residence at the castle itself in August. Her break usually ends around late September/early October with an engagement or two in Scotland before heading south.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

***********

October 8: One last church outing at Balmoral before heading back to London. The Queen rode to church with Lady Sarah Chatto and wore her Aquamarine Clip Brooches. Photos at the Daily Mail if you're so inclined.

September 29: Inching back into the public sphere with an engagement in Aberdeen, covered here.

September 24: The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch makes a repeat church appearance, and HM recruits Prince William as her car companion.

September 21: Our tour of Balmoral interiors continues (and of Her Maj's signature Scotland casual look, with the same stuff as the previous day), thanks to an audience with Peter Cosgrove, the Governor-General of Australia. Spot the classic iPod on the dock behind them!

September 20: The Queen received Canada's Governor General Designate Julie Payette, for an audience at Balmoral. This is classic casual QEII: a strand of pearls, Pearl Stud Earrings, Black Strap Watch, Engagement and Wedding Rings. And a Balmoral tartan skirt, of course, because that's the only way to roll.

September 10: The Saskatchewan Tourmaline Flower Brooch makes an appearance - its first since 2015! - at church.

September 9: The Queen was spotted out riding at Balmoral, pictures at the Express.

September 4: Interrupting the Balmoral holiday for a quick engagement opening the Queensferry Crossing and for a peek at a rare brooch: Queen Mary's Thistle Brooch.

September 3: Church again, and this time we can see that the brooch on duty is the Flower Basket Brooch.

September 2: Annual appearance at the Braemar Gathering, covered separately here.

August 31: Members of the family were seen driving out of Balmoral on the anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales' death; here's The Queen. I'll spare you links to articles trying to make a big deal out of the fact that they were at Balmoral just like they were in 1997.

August 27: Another church visit can be seen in this gallery at Rex, but can't identify the brooch.

August 20: Finally, a church-goin' brooch we can identify! The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch is on its sixth appearance for 2017. It seems most of the Royal Family is hanging around Balmoral right now, as the church-goin' crowd included The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of York, The Earl and (I think) Countess of Wessex, and Zara and Mike Tindall. Pictures at the link below and also at the DM.

August 13: The Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended church at Balmoral, in another unidentifiable brooch. Photos at the Daily Mail.

August 7: The traditional welcome ceremony kicks off the start of The Queen's official residence at Balmoral Castle. Her inspection of the Royal Guard included both the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge - which is getting a lot of mileage this year - and Cruachan IV, the mischievous regimental mascot that tried to take a bite out of Her Maj's flowers at their last meeting.

August 5: The Queen made a surprise appearance at the Aboyne Highland Games to mark its 150th anniversary. She wore her Diamond Art Deco Double Clip Brooch. [STV]

July 30: Church at Balmoral, wearing what appears to be an emerald brooch - maybe the Round Cambridge Emerald without its pendant, but it's impossible to say for certain. [Daily Mail]

New Scotland Yard Opening

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, officially opened the new headquarters of the Metropolitan Police at New Scotland Yard, Victoria Embankment, London.

Several people have commented on how quickly The Queen is reusing her outfits lately, and this is no exception; it was used for a garden party in May. (It was worn the day after the Manchester terrorist attack. Relatedly, if perhaps coincidentally, this visit was originally scheduled to take place the day after the Westminster attacks in March, and was postponed to now.)

Royal Family

Once again, The Queen's brooch choice has been influenced by the golden buttons on this Stewart Parvin coat, and she's selected the Singapore brooch. It really has become a modern favorite, this brooch.

Royal Ascot, Day 1

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.

A color splash from Stewart Parvin and Rachel Trevor-Morgan kicks off this year's Ascot outfit parade. I confess, I was a little afraid at first peek that Her Maj might have repeated her bummer of an Ascot Day 1 brooch pick from last year - the Frosted Sunflower Brooch - but she went with a newer favorite in the golden family instead: the Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch. Lime green, I suppose, isn't the easiest color to coordinate with.

While my vigil for the return of the Williamson Diamond Brooch continues, The Duchess of Cornwall kindly stepped in to fulfill my need for a pink jewel by wearing her pink topaz choker - a.k.a., one of my favorite Cams jewels. And Chaz even chipped in with a pink tie! A+ Ascot coordination.

Stay tuned to the other blog for highlights from the other royal family members present, including some more jewels from Her Maj's vault on loan!

Epsom Derby

The Queen, accompanied by Princess Alexandra of Kent, attended Investec Derby Day at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Aren't these two a delightfully bright pair? The very picture of spring, they are. The Queen accented her second sunshine yellow Stewart Parvin coat and Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat combo in as many weeks with a delicate sprinkling of diamonds, courtesy of the Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch.

When she takes her coat off, Her Maj usually transfers the brooch over to her dress, but this one doesn't seem to have made the jump.

22 January 2017

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended church at Sandringham, Norfolk.

Ah! The return of a very elegant outfit, a Karl Ludwig fur-trimmed coat and Philip Somerville hat (here's better look from a previous outing). The Singapore brooch is good with this, no?

Co-operation Ireland Reception and Investiture at Buckingham Palace

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended a reception for Co-operation Ireland, of which The Queen is joint patron.

The delicate filigree of the Singapore brooch is holding up pretty well on this textured suit, but it's nothing compared to the unmistakable Cullinan V Brooch on the new portrait Her Maj unveiled.

Also today, The Queen held an Investiture at Buckingham Palace.

No sign of a brooch, so far.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

HM here is being presented with a maquette of a statue of "In Flanders Fields" writer John McCrae, and we are being presented with another opportunity to play everybody's favorite audience game, Who's in the Pictures?. I see portraits of the Belgian and Dutch sovereign couples have made the cut on the side there, and this pleases me.

25 June 2016

The Wedding of Alexandra Knatchbull and Thomas Hooper

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended the wedding of The Hon. Alexandra Knatchbull and Mr. Thomas Hooper at Romsey Abbey, Romsey, Hampshire.

The "society wedding of the year" belongs to Alexandra Knatchbull, great-granddaughter of the late Earl Mountbatten. The ties of family and friendship run deep between her family and the royals, as demonstrated by a guest list including The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Queen Sofia of Spain, King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, and Jordan's Prince Hassan bin Talal and Princess Sarvath El Hassan.

The Prince of Wales walked the bride down the aisle, and she wore the Mountbatten Star Tiara. The Queen wore one of her favorite brooches of late, Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch.

High Commissioners' Banquet and Audiences

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended a reception for the High Commissioners' Banquet to mark Commonwealth Week at the Guildhall, London.
I said the first time we saw this outfit/brooch combo - which was during Commonwealth week last year - that I felt this suit needs a stronger gold brooch, and I have to stick with that assessment on second glance.

Also today, The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.
I don't know what prompted this different look at the usual audience room, but I do know that a peek at this little sit down with the splendidly attired High Commissioner for Rwanda makes me way too happy. A brooch view! Bless. What I really can't believe is that I don't have a positively identified public appearance for the Cambridge Pearl - always a favorite - listed since July 2015. Inconceivable.

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended church at Sandringham, Norfolk.

Making one last appearance for the year, the Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch continues its run of popularity with four known appearances in both 2014 and 2015. Not bad for a 2012 gift.

Luncheon for The President of Kazakhstan

The Queen, with The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duke of York, welcomed The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, to Buckingham Palace during his official visit to the United Kingdom. The President was accompanied by his daughter, Deputy Prime Minister Dariga Nazarbayeva.
This visit is not without its controversy, but sticking strictly to our wheelhouse, I was thrilled to see this brooch again. Thanks to some lovely readers, I've recently been able to update the entry for the Gold Filigree Brooch and rename it, because we've identified its provenance: a Diamond Jubilee present from Singapore! Click the brooch name below to read more.

The Christening of Princess Charlotte

The Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, attended the christening of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham.
We will be covering this event tomorrow on the other blog, but over here, we'll cover the interests of this blog (that would be the jewels of The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall, in case you hadn't picked up on that).

The Queen selected the Gold Filigree Brooch(Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch) to go with her pale pink outfit, and I think this is my favorite appearance of this brooch yet - light, fresh, and summery! Perfect for the christening of a great-granddaughter. This brooch first appeared in 2012 and though we don't know anything about its history, we've seen it several times since. Update: It was a gift from Singapore, turned into a personal favorite.
(Also relevant to all interests, everywhere: consultations of great importance with one's great granny.)

The Duchess of Cornwall paired her Everyday Pearl Earrings with her Pearl Four Strand choker with Large Diamond Clasp - a frequent selection for special occasions - and layered that over the small "C" charm chain she's been wearing with everything lately.

Also, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended Sunday service at Sandringham earlier (they were not arriving for the christening itself here, despite what the caption the tweet below says).
Not seen in this snap (but seen elsewhere), The Queen was wearing the Cambridge Pearl Pendant Brooch.

Again, stay tuned tomorrow at the other blog for coverage of the rest of the event.

Commonwealth Day

We will have a full fashion rundown of the royal attendees at the Commonwealth Day festivities on the other blog tomorrow, but until then, a brooch-focused look at The Queen's day of Commonwealth fun...

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh joined other members of the Royal Family at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day Observance Service.
For more: Zimbio gallery, BBC article.
The Gold Filigree Brooch is a good match for this coat, no? This is one of the newer brooches in the collection (newer to us, at least), but it continues to be popular with Her Maj. Update: And it has a special Commonwealth connection, coming from Singapore!

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were present at a Reception given by the Commonwealth Secretary-General at Marlborough House.
For more: Zimbio gallery.
Apparently popular enough there was no need to change it up for the evening reception. I adore this suit (of course I do, it's purple and sooo rich) but it needs something stronger. Rare is the day when I would prefer Ye Olde Sunflower Brooch, but if it can't be amethyst, it needs to be, I don't know, more golden than this.

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

On February 12th, The Queen recorded her Commonwealth radio message.
For more: The address at The Commonwealth's YouTube site, Express article.
We saw this outfit back on the day it was worn, when she had an audience. Nice to have confirmation that my brooch guess was correct, though.

Chatham House Academy Launch and Audiences

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, attended the launch of The Queen Elizabeth II Academy for Leadership in International Affairs at Chatham House, London.
I continue to be surprised at how many times we've seen this brooch since it's 2012 debut, but it does make a nice accessory to all those gold buttons.

Earlier, The Queen held several audiences at Buckingham Palace.
This one is not so clear...looks like it could be the old Frosted Sunflower.

State Visit from Singapore, Farewell, and Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh bid farewell to the President of the Republic of Singapore and Mrs. Tan at the conclusion of their State Visit to the United Kingdom.
For more: Zimbio gallery.
There was a gold theme to this two brooch day, starting with the Gold Filigree Brooch, which debuted in 2012 and has been seen several times since. And, update: There's a reason why she wore it - it was a gift from President Tan and Singapore!

Engagement and Wedding Rings

Also today, The Queen received the President of Ghana and his wife for an audience at Buckingham Palace.

And finishing with the Gold Trellis, which has been a part of the collection since her wedding. A metal better suited to these warmer tones, I think.
