State Visit to Germany, Visit to Frankfurt

On the second full day of their state visit to Germany, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited Frankfurt, where they toured St. Paul's Church and attended a lunch hosted by the Minister-President of Hesse at the Römer.
Okay, I guess we really are reusing our Ascot brooches. I can't lie, I would have preferred something other than the Shamrock Brooch on this peacock-inspired Angela Kelly outfit.
But brooches aside, it was a good day in Frankfurt, with huge crowds turning out to greet the royals. Prince Philip even got to reunite with a couple of his relatives, the Margrave of Baden and the Landgrave of Hesse.

Royal Ascot, Day 3

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.
From lavish and historical to petite and probably modern - we've changed direction so fast, I got whiplash. All other outings for this Shamrock Brooch so far have been at events in Northern Ireland or for the Irish community, so this is still an interesting choice for her, and one that works nicely on this pistachio Angela Kelly ensemble. (As always, click the brooch name below for full brooch details.)

Heathrow Terminal 2 Opening and Visit to Northern Ireland: Arrival and Audiences

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh departed for Northern Ireland from Heathrow Airport. Before leaving, the Queen officially opened the new Terminal 2, named The Queen's Terminal.
I was hoping this week's visit to Northern Ireland would give us another glimpse of the Shamrock Brooch, debuted during their Diamond Jubilee visit and also seen during this year's Irish state visit. And look at that, my wish granted on the first go! Delightful. (Oh, and that terminal the Queen opened today? Yeah, she also opened the last Terminal 2, in 1955. She's now officially more durable than 90% of all building materials.)

The Queen arrived in Northern Ireland and then held audiences at Hillsborough Castle.
She was wearing the same outfit and brooch. Click here for an article and photos.

Irish Community Reception and Audiences

The Queen, together with other members of the Royal Family, hosted a reception for members of the Irish community at Buckingham Palace.

Big news: Her Majesty met one of the One Direction people. (I'm sure she could hardly contain herself.) But no, here's the big news that matters to this blog: she gave us a second outing of the diamond and emerald Shamrock Brooch! Huzzah. It was last seen in 2012 during her visit to Northern Ireland, so she's sticking strictly to her theme. Unfortunately, it's not a fantastic match to a patterned suit - just a little too delicate to be recognized.
The reception was held because the Irish president is arriving for a state visit on April 8th. Perhaps we'll get another look at the Irish Silver Spiral Brooch from her 2011 Irish visit?

Also today... The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace, receiving the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador plus a new recipient of the Order of Merit. It was purple heaven - click here for a gallery.

Visit to Northern Ireland, Day 1

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh today commenced a visit to Northern Ireland in celebration of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. Her Majesty and His Royal Highness attended a Service of Thanksgiving in St. Macartin's Cathedral, Enniskillen, and afterwards met families of the victims of the 1987 Enniskillen Bombing. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh subsequently visited St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church and South West Acute Hospital.
Tell me something...doesn't this hat ornamentation look like the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara? Atta girl, Lil, show those protestors who wears the tiara around these parts. A short second to my hat distraction is the Shamrock Brooch, which I don't recall seeing before but doesn't surprise me at all. She really does have a gem for every occasion.

The Shamrock Brooch

The Shamrock Brooch
A brooch of three shamrocks in diamonds with an emerald tie appeared during The Queen's 2012 visit to Northern Ireland. The Shamrock Brooch doesn't seem to have a known history at this time, though the motif makes a gift from a group associated with Northern Ireland a possible guess, and the late appearance makes a recent gift or something unearthed from The Queen Mother's collection another possible guess. Another possibility is that it belongs to a set of four brooches given to The Queen by The Sultan of Oman (see the Three Thistle Brooch entry for more details), but these are all only speculation. The Queen certainly seems to be running with the shamrock motif, though, sporting it in Northern Ireland and for an Irish engagement at home.
