Balmoral Holiday, 2019

The Queen's annual break at Balmoral in Scotland is in full swing, with a couple of Sunday church appearances ahead of her official welcome to the castle. The Balmoral holiday usually lasts into October.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

***********

NEW! October 6: A brooch for Lady Sarah Chatto will have to do for what should be the last church outing of the Balmoral break, as Her Maj went for none. There's a London engagement planned for The Queen on Friday.

September 29: Closing out September with the Diamond and Pearl Navette Brooch, already on its fourth outing of the year.

September 22: Back to a standard this week, the Pearl Trefoil Brooch.  Plus a different family member in the guest seat.

September 15: The Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge for church today.

September 8: A lovely big pop of blue from Prince Albert's Sapphire Brooch adorned The Queen's coat for this Sunday's church service.

September 7: This looks to be a jolly group: The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, and Peter and Autumn Phillips joined Her Maj for this year's Braemar Gathering. The Queen naturally continued her tradition of wearing the Braemar Feather Brooch for the event.

September 1: The Tudor Rose Brooch made the trip to Scotland for this morning's church service.

August 25: I'm so glad we got a decent view of today's church brooch - we've only seen the Diamond and Ruby Butterfly Brooch one other time since this site started, back in 2012. We probably have Her Maj's car companion, The Duchess of Cambridge, to thank for that.

August 18: The Sapphire Jubilee Snowflake Brooch gets its third outing of the year for a trip to church with the Wessexes (or the Forfars, I suppose, since Edward now has the title of The Earl of Forfar for use when in Scotland).

August 17: The Queen attended a craft fair at Crathie Kirk Hall in the biggest brooch of the break so far, Queen Mary's Turquoise and Diamond Brooch.

August 11: The Small Pink and Diamond Brooch for another Sunday drive to church.

August 6: The Queen's official welcome (after staying at another property until the castle closes to visitors and is readied for her) involves a guard of honor and therefore, as it often does, the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge.

August 4: Another Sunday church mystery and my half thought is maybe the Greville Scroll Brooch? [Daily Mail]

July 28: The first Sunday outing for church at Crathie Kirk of the break, and unsurprisingly, the brooch is difficult to identify.

Balmoral Holiday, 2018

By Nick Bramhall from Aberdeen, UK - Balmoral Castle Uploaded by Kurpfalzbilder.de, CC BY-SA 2.0

The Queen started her annual summer Balmoral holiday on July 19. She stayed at Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate while the castle was still open to the public as she usually does, followed by taking up official residence at the castle itself on August 6. Her break usually ends around late September/early October with an engagement or two in Scotland before heading south.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

October 7: NEW! As she wraps up her Balmoral break, Her Maj jumps straight from summer to winter with her fur-trimmed red outfit. Both the Gold Trellis Brooch and Lady Sarah Chatto accompanied her to church today.

September 30: The Sapphire and Diamond Grapes Brooch shows up at church as blue continues to be the color of the summer.

September 23: The Diamond and Pearl Navette Brooch makes another church appearance. In other Balmoral news, The Queen was spotted checking in on some horses, and unfortunately one of her ladies-in-waiting, The Hon. Mary Morrison, broke her ankle in a fall at the castle. [Express, Hello]

September 16: Another church brooch that needs no debate: the Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch.

September 9: Church again and hmm, interesting, this kinda looks like a badge to me. We'll see what you think. Here's a gallery for your investigation. [Zimbio]

September 2: The Cullinan V Brooch stands out beautifully on this navy coat for another Sunday at Crathie Kirk.

September 1: The annual Braemar Gathering has its own post right here.

August 26: More members of the Royal Family have arrived at Balmoral. The Queen, wearing the Pearl Navette Brooch, was joined in her car for church by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings on loan from The Queen. [Evening Standard]

August 19: A good effort from the Pearl Trefoil Brooch here, trying to stand out on this beige tweed for another Sunday church outing.

August 12: It's about time for a thistle brooch. The Three Thistle Brooch was worn to church at Balmoral. Princess Beatrice accompanied her grandmother, wearing a fabulous Garbo hat. [People, Sun]

August 6: The Queen starts her official residency at Balmoral Castle with the traditional welcome ceremony. This always includes inspecting a Royal Guard, so of course the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge was the pick.

August 5: Church at Balmoral, and if history's an indication, not the first time this summer the brooch will be tough to identify.

July 29: Church at Crathie Kirk near the Balmoral estate, her place of worship while in residence, wearing the Jardine Star Brooch. [Hello]

The Queen started her annual summer Balmoral holiday in July at Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate, while the castle was still open to the public, followed by taking up official residence at the castle itself in August. Her break usually ends around late September/early October with an engagement or two in Scotland before heading south.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

October 8: One last church outing at Balmoral before heading back to London. The Queen rode to church with Lady Sarah Chatto and wore her Aquamarine Clip Brooches. Photos at the Daily Mail if you're so inclined.

September 29: Inching back into the public sphere with an engagement in Aberdeen, covered here.

September 24: The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch makes a repeat church appearance, and HM recruits Prince William as her car companion.

September 21: Our tour of Balmoral interiors continues (and of Her Maj's signature Scotland casual look, with the same stuff as the previous day), thanks to an audience with Peter Cosgrove, the Governor-General of Australia. Spot the classic iPod on the dock behind them!

September 20: The Queen received Canada's Governor General Designate Julie Payette, for an audience at Balmoral. This is classic casual QEII: a strand of pearls, Pearl Stud Earrings, Black Strap Watch, Engagement and Wedding Rings. And a Balmoral tartan skirt, of course, because that's the only way to roll.

September 10: The Saskatchewan Tourmaline Flower Brooch makes an appearance - its first since 2015! - at church.

September 9: The Queen was spotted out riding at Balmoral, pictures at the Express.

September 4: Interrupting the Balmoral holiday for a quick engagement opening the Queensferry Crossing and for a peek at a rare brooch: Queen Mary's Thistle Brooch.

September 3: Church again, and this time we can see that the brooch on duty is the Flower Basket Brooch.

September 2: Annual appearance at the Braemar Gathering, covered separately here.

August 31: Members of the family were seen driving out of Balmoral on the anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales' death; here's The Queen. I'll spare you links to articles trying to make a big deal out of the fact that they were at Balmoral just like they were in 1997.

August 27: Another church visit can be seen in this gallery at Rex, but can't identify the brooch.

August 20: Finally, a church-goin' brooch we can identify! The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch is on its sixth appearance for 2017. It seems most of the Royal Family is hanging around Balmoral right now, as the church-goin' crowd included The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of York, The Earl and (I think) Countess of Wessex, and Zara and Mike Tindall. Pictures at the link below and also at the DM.

August 13: The Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended church at Balmoral, in another unidentifiable brooch. Photos at the Daily Mail.

August 7: The traditional welcome ceremony kicks off the start of The Queen's official residence at Balmoral Castle. Her inspection of the Royal Guard included both the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge - which is getting a lot of mileage this year - and Cruachan IV, the mischievous regimental mascot that tried to take a bite out of Her Maj's flowers at their last meeting.

August 5: The Queen made a surprise appearance at the Aboyne Highland Games to mark its 150th anniversary. She wore her Diamond Art Deco Double Clip Brooch. [STV]

July 30: Church at Balmoral, wearing what appears to be an emerald brooch - maybe the Round Cambridge Emerald without its pendant, but it's impossible to say for certain. [Daily Mail]

July 23: Church at Balmoral in the Greville Scroll Brooch.

Holyrood Week: Canal Opening, Stirling Castle Visit, and Audience at the Palace of Holyroodhouse

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the Queen Elizabeth II Canal and visited The Kelpies in Scotland, followed by a visit to Stirling Castle for a service marking the 70th anniversary of The Queen's appointment as Colonel in Chief of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

For more: Zimbio gallery.

Today is a rare triple brooch day, including a doubled up badge appearance! Badges from both the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and the Royal Regiment of Scotland (of which the Highlanders are a part) made the cut for the first events of the day - although just the Highlanders badge was transferred over to the dress when the coat was removed.

Cpl Ben Maher/MoD/Crown copyright 2017

Today was also a triple horse day, which HM probably appreciated as much as we here appreciate a triple brooch day. The royal couple met a pair at The Kelpies, and then HM had to defend her posy of flowers from a hungry mascot.

Also today, The Queen received the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, for an audience at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
For more: Zimbio gallery.

Our third brooch of the day has been getting quite a workout over the past year, hasn't it? I don't think the Maple Leaf has seen this much action since it was a Queen Elizabeth fave during World War II. A country's big birthday will do that do a brooch, I suppose. You can see the brooch a bit better on video:

And you can add this to the list of reasons she carries her handbag inside the "house": so nobody takes her spot.

Holyrood Week: Ceremony of the Keys

The Queen arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, at the start of her annual week of Scottish engagements. Her Majesty was presented with the Keys of the City which she returned in the traditional Ceremony of the Keys. A Guard of Honor mounted in the Forecourt of the Palace was reviewed.

June's annual traditions roll right into July's annual traditions, and The Queen's working week in Scotland. Plus her other usual tradition of wearing the appropriate military badge for the occasion, of course.

Balmoral Holiday, 2016

The Queen arrived at Balmoral in July and stayed at another property on the estate while the castle was still open for visitors, making her official arrival in August. As we have done in the past during Her Majesty's official summer holiday, we'll gather any sightings during the break in this post.

A link for this post will be on the sidebar under Recently Updated Events and it will include the date of the last update, so you can find it any time and don't miss anything. (And if you see I've missed one, help me out and drop a comment below!)

We have some other fun stuff to cover while she's hidden away, so stay tuned...

September 18: NEW! Sunday church, and a golden brooch I can't quite identify. The Queen also hosted new Prime Minister Theresa May for a Balmoral visit.

September 11: Sunday church, but no brooch. The Queen has also been pictured driving around the Balmoral estate with The Duchess of Cambridge and with Carole Middleton; pictures at the Daily Mail.

September 4: Sunday church again, this time with a pretty purple outfit and the Kent Amethyst Brooch.

September 3: The annual Braemar Gathering, covered here.

August 14: The Queen can be seen arriving at church in bright pink in this video.

August 8: Official arrival at Balmoral Castle, with a review of a Royal Guard from The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland. The Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge rests on her natty suit.

Plus, an opportunity to check in on Regimental Mascot Cruachan IV! A must for the start of any summer break.

July 31: The Queen arrived at church in a hat that was, apparently, "the talk of the town". But no brooch visible.

July 24: The Queen arrived at church in a beige summer tweed. No brooch visible.

Holyrood Week: Arrival and Ceremony of the Keys

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, at the start of their annual week of Scottish engagements. Her Majesty was presented with the Keys of the City which she returned in the traditional Ceremony of the Keys. A Guard of Honor mounted in the Forecourt of the Palace was reviewed.

Once again, the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge is the pick for HM's official arrival in Edinburgh, where she will undertake a week of engagements in Scotland while based at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. That's all very appropriate, since she reviews troops during the ceremony. But just as I was ready to say this lavender outfit would be perfection with an amethyst brooch...

I saw that she already had me covered when she stepped off the train. Bless.

Balmoral Holiday, 2015

The Queen has been at Balmoral for about two weeks, staying at another property on the estate while the castle was still open for visitors. Today, August 10, was her official arrival at the Balmoral Castle, and with that, we'll start our official Balmoral Holiday post for the year.

As we did last year, sightings of Her Maj while on her Scottish estate will be collected here throughout her break. You can find a link for this post on the sidebar under Recently Updated Events. The link will tell you the last time the post was updated.

(We have some jewels to cover while she's away, so stay tuned!)

  • August 19: The Sons of Scotland Pipe Band played at Balmoral for The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Countess of Wessex, and Lady Louise Windsor. Her Majesty was in casual mode for the private performance (read: no jewels on display), but you can read all about it at The Countess of Wessex Blog.
  • September 5: As always, The Queen attended the annual Braemar Gathering.
  • September 6: Attending Sunday service at Crathie Church, Her Maj played to her Scottish location with the Three Thistle Brooch:
  • September 13: The Queen accepted an invitation to the FEI European Eventing Championship at Blair Castle, where she presented medals. No brooch, not unusual for this houndstooth coat:

Holyrood Week, Day 1: Arrival

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, at the start of their annual week of Scottish engagements. Her Majesty was presented with the Keys of the City which she returned in the traditional Ceremony of the Keys. A Guard of Honor mounted in the Forecourt of the Palace was reviewed.

And we're back! Another packed week lies ahead, and she's started her Scottish trip with the annual Ceremony of the Keys. The British Monarchy shared a snap from of the same moment, in the first year of her reign:
This year, as she usually does, she wears a military badge on instead of a decorative brooch, since the review of a Guard of Honor is part of her ceremonial arrival.

Balmoral Holiday, 2014

The Queen has officially started her annual holiday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. I will collect links to her appearances during the break here, and you'll find the link to this post on the side bar under Recently Updated Events until public events start up again. During the break, I have updates to take care of and (time permitting) we have some backlogged jewels to cover, so stay tuned!

I love the color of her coat, but I'm not sold on the overall combo, so I'll be interested to hear what you think. Anyway, on the brooch front, we've got a badge peeking out from behind those flowers.

Guard Inspection at Balmoral

The Queen inspected the Royal Scots Borderers at the gates of Balmoral Castle, Scotland, to mark the official start to her summer break.
Click above for more from the Daily Mail.
She's been up in Scotland for a while now, but this marked the start of her official residence at the main house - she's been staying at another property on the estate up to now. And this was a lovely little arrival outfit, no?

Holyrood Week, Day 4: Dreghorn Barracks

The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief, visited Dreghorn Barracks and presented a Pipe Banner to the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Another regimental badge - and I suspect this is the one that was seen on her arrival in Scotland.

Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge

The Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge, form and brooch
The Queen is Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and of course she has a brooch form of their badge to wear on all appropriate occasions.
This one has plenty of Scottish symbolism: the lion is the Lion Rampant of the Royal Standard of Scotland, the X behind it is the Saltire of St. Andrew, and the banner below bears the regiment's motto, Nemo me impune lacessit ("No one provokes me with impunity" - also the motto of the Order of the Thistle). The badge is topped by a crown.
