Bit of a mixed bag outfit for The Countess of Wessex there - but a perfect Christmas-y green for Her Maj with yet another look at one of those Cambridge emeralds.

Royal Philatelic Society 150th Anniversary

The Queen visited The Royal Philatelic Society in London to open a new building on its 150th Anniversary.

The fifth appearance for this emerald this year, and the first without the pendant. I'll take that pro-pendant ratio.

A nice big emerald (x2)! It's like a welcome back present for us all.

It's already our third sighting of the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch for the year, think it has a shot at making the year's most popular brooch list? (It did back in 2015.)

State Visit from the United States, Welcome Ceremony and State Banquet

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family hosted a welcome ceremony, a luncheon, and a state banquet on Day 1 of the American state visit to the United Kingdom.

Plenty of bejeweled treats from today's events - starting with a two brooch/two pendant daytime roster! The Queen started out with the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch with its pendant attached. It's already the second time this year we've seen this one, and I like that track record. The Duchess of Cornwall was decked out in her usual picks, her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings.

ITN screencap

Instead of transferring the Cambridge Emerald to her dress once inside Buckingham Palace for the luncheon, The Queen gave us a different brooch on her dress: the Cullinan VI and VIII! It's also the second 2019 appearance for this brooch, and even more of a treat.

For the evening's state banquet, I suppose you could say The Queen paid tribute to the shared flag colors of the two nations with her combo of rubies, diamonds, and the Garter blue sash. These are some rare-ish picks, in fact: the Burmese Ruby Tiara hasn't been worn in the time this site's been keeping track and the Crown Ruby Earrings and Necklace were last worn in 2015. Her white gown features daisies with crystal centers and is, as usual, by Angela Kelly.

The Duchess of Cornwall has been using her mother-in-law's strategy of white gowns for state events for some time now, continued this evening in her repeated Bruce Oldfield dress. She also wore my favorite of her pearl chokers for a lovely dash of pink and brought out the earrings she wore on her wedding day for the first time in a while.

The Duchess of Cambridge's big debut tonight was the riband and star of the Royal Victorian Order. It's her first time in a sash; she was given the honor on her wedding anniversary earlier this year. She paired this with her usual state banquet tiara choice and the sapphire and diamond earrings she has previously loaned from The Queen. Her white gown is by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

Big news from The Countess of Wessex, too, as her Wedding Tiara has had a bit of a makeover! The side elements have been changed and moved closer in - reducing some of the "cat ear" effect the previous design was often tagged with.

It also looks as though she is wearing the Diamond Chandelier Drop Demi-Parure on loan from The Queen.

Since Sophie left the aquamarine aficionado post open for the evening, The Princess Royal stepped up with her Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara and accompanying aqua gems.

The Duchess of Gloucester was in a favorite tiara, the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara.

Rounding things out in suites of pearls and diamonds, Princess Michael of Kent wore the Kent Festoon Tiara and Princess Alexandra wore the Ogilvy Tiara in its pearl version.

All in all, a splendid display of Windsor jewels!

Please note: This blog is focused on the members of the British royal family. During the course of this state visit, I will ask that all comments stick to that focus and refrain from discussing politics or this visit's guests. Thank you for your understanding!

May 12: Sometimes Her Maj ditches the pendant on the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch when her outfit color leans toward the teal end of things, but - needless to say - I'm always happier when the pendant's in place.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

Funny how certain brooches become task-specific favorites; this is the Round Cambridge Emerald's fourth audience appearance in a row. (You'll have to use the arrows to click through the gallery on the Instagram post embedded above to see it.)

The RAF Club commissioned a new portrait for their 100th anniversary. Details from the Royal Family: "Started in February 2018 and set in the White Drawing Room of Windsor Castle, the portrait was painted by Benjamin Sullivan – who won the BP Portrait Award in 2017. The portrait includes a number of RAF elements: in the background is a Spitfire – ‘S’ for ‘Strike’ - from 253 Squadron from which the artist's grandfather, F/Lt JM Sullivan, flew over Albania during WW2. The image on the right is a portion of ‘Hurricanes in Flight‘ (1944), by Eric Ravilous, painted as part of his work for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee. Ravilous lived and worked near Benjamin Sullivan, and in the 1930’s, as a member of the Great Bardfield Artists, whose body of work is now housed at the Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden."

The portrait also includes all The Queen's daily essentials: the Three Strand Pearl Necklace, Queen Mary's Button Earrings, the Gold Watch, the Engagement and Wedding Rings, the black Launer handbag. And the brooch, of course: The Queen Mother's Aquamarine Art Deco Brooch.

Funeral of Countess Mountbatten of Burma and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen, joined by other members of the Royal Family, attended the funeral of Countess Mountbatten of Burma at St. Paul's Church, Knightsbridge.

Several members of the Royal Family gathered to say goodbye to Patricia Knatchbull, who was Prince Philip's first cousin, The Queen's third cousin, and The Prince of Wales' godmother. The group included Her Majesty (who rarely attends funerals herself) plus The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of York, The Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, The Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Lady Sarah Chatto, and Lady Helen Taylor.

Also today, The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

That makes two brooches for the day, and they're both pretty big ones. For those of you that wanted some Cambridge emerald action at Ascot, here it is, just a few days late.

National Cyber Security Centre Opening

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the National Cyber Security Centre in London.

Her Maj seems to prefer this brooch without its pendant when the outfit shade leans toward blue. That's when I'd most like to see the pendant, actually, since emerald is a more interesting choice than the usual white stones on a color like this. (Who am I kidding, I always want the pendant.)

Ooh, this would have been a prime opportunity to put the pendant on this brooch. I would have appreciated the extra emerald today. Oh, I'm not really complaining - I'm rooting this brooch on to make it onto the list of the year's favorites for the second year in a row, actually. (Appearance #4 and counting!)

18 October 2016

Team GB Reception, Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family hosted a reception for Team GB's Olympic and Paralympic athletes at Buckingham Palace.

I think she went with a dress zazzy enough to coordinate with those bright medals and their colorful ribbons, just in case the opportunity opened up to swipe one. It's what I would do.

ITN screencap
But she came with her own bling, of course. The Jardine Star's going to have to step it up if it wants to make the list of 2016 favorites.

Earlier: The Queen received the Governor of South Australia, the Hon. Hieu Van Le, and his wife, Mrs. Le, for an audience at Buckingham Palace.

The Round Cambridge Emerald's on its third appearance for the year. All three have been at Buck Pal audiences, and I'm totally on board with making this the new "audience brooch" standard.

Ooh, this is a treat, we haven't seen the Greville Ivy Leaf Brooches used in several years! And she wore beige gloves, while we're noting things that we don't always see.

Also at this event, a chat with the newly knighted Sir Rod Stewart:
Grandmothers, always checking up on you.

Earlier, The Queen received the President of Croatia for a private audience at Buckingham Palace.

We also got some emerald love, two treats in one day. She knows we missed her, bless.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Base Opening, and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened a new operational base for East Anglian Air Ambulance at Cambridge Airport, where The Duke of Cambridge is a helicopter pilot.

This is a pretty perfect brooch for this outfit, picking up on a little of the floral dress beneath. (This photo's for those of you that were entertained by William dwarfing his grandparents at the Thistle service last week, by the way.)

A visit with her grandson was supposed to be the highlight of Her Maj's day. Instead, it was a quick trip back to Buckingham Palace as the revolving door of prime ministers spun once more:

David Cameron had an Audience of The Queen, and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister. The Queen the received in audience Theresa May and requested her to form a new Administration.

Welcoming your thirteenth British prime minister does call for something a little larger on the brooch front.

St. Columba's Church Anniversary and State Visit Announcement

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited St. Columba's Church of Scotland, Knightsbridge, London to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the church's rededication.
Two appearances doesn't make a trend, but it sure would be grand if the recent appearance of the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara in its green version plus this Cambridge emerald brooch was the start of an emerald one (probably not, but a jewel lover can dream). Still, greedy me can't help but note that I miss the pendant on this brooch very much here.

A general news update, while we're at it...
The first tiara occasion of 2016 has just been announced, and it's a doozy: King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain are coming for a state visit! Windsor Castle, March 8-10, mark your calendars. The last state visits exchanged between the countries were in 1986 (when Spain came to the UK) and 1988 (when the UK went to Spain). Rest assured, I have my jumpy claps at the ready.

Update: The Queen also held audiences today, see here.

Buckingham Palace Garden Party and Audiences

The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace, including with the President of Italy, Sergio Matterella.
It's a double brooch day! Firstly, dressing to blend in with her wall color, but I can't help but note this is the second appearance in a row where this Cambridge emerald brooch gets to keep its pendant. A promising trend, I hope.

Engagement and Wedding Rings

The Queen, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, hosted a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
And secondly, the Rose Gold Brooch, which really needs a strong background color like this to stand out (similar to last year's Maundy Service, though a different outfit).

As always, several other royal attendees were hanging about, including The Dapper Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess of Gloucester (who can just be seen behind The Queen above), plus these characters:

Breaking out the outfit she sported for the Cambridge wedding back in 2011, The Princess Royal appears to have had a whale of a time. She's holding her own in the hardware department, too, with diamond flower earrings, a double strand of pearls, and a pretty big brooch.
It's always a bit jarring to see her in something with such added fuss (and in something crafted in recent years), isn't it? Takes a blink or two to realize who you're looking at.

Speaking of added fuss...I'm just not sure about this combination of pattern and embellishment, Princess Beatrice. But I can't lie, I covet those shoes and their saucy metallic toes. Like tap shoes with attitude.

It's not a fashion accessory, but I am certain that Princess Michael chose an outfit with black trim to coordinate with her new pirate life and you have to love her for making the best of things. (Apparently she had eye surgery last week.) The always well-tailored Prince Michael rounded out the black and white theme with a gray scheme of his own.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Cambridge was also present.

Well now, this is interesting: Prince William's informal king-in-waiting training continues as he watches his granny receiving credentials from ambassadors for the first time. The PA did say that he does not intend to carry out audiences on her behalf in the future, just that he is observing.
Also interesting, to this blog at least, is that HM has once again returned the pendant to the bottom of the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch. We always love that, don't we?

P.S.: The Queen's not done for the day. She has an evening reception to attend, so we'll be back later.

Commonwealth Day

We will have a full fashion rundown of the royal attendees at the Commonwealth Day festivities on the other blog tomorrow, but until then, a brooch-focused look at The Queen's day of Commonwealth fun...

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh joined other members of the Royal Family at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day Observance Service.
For more: Zimbio gallery, BBC article.
The Gold Filigree Brooch is a good match for this coat, no? This is one of the newer brooches in the collection (newer to us, at least), but it continues to be popular with Her Maj. Update: And it has a special Commonwealth connection, coming from Singapore!

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were present at a Reception given by the Commonwealth Secretary-General at Marlborough House.
For more: Zimbio gallery.
Apparently popular enough there was no need to change it up for the evening reception. I adore this suit (of course I do, it's purple and sooo rich) but it needs something stronger. Rare is the day when I would prefer Ye Olde Sunflower Brooch, but if it can't be amethyst, it needs to be, I don't know, more golden than this.

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

On February 12th, The Queen recorded her Commonwealth radio message.

We saw this outfit back on the day it was worn, when she had an audience. Nice to have confirmation that my brooch guess was correct, though.

Difficult to see as always, but it looks like the Round Cambridge Emerald Brooch (without pendant) is continuing its resurgence in the brooch stakes.
