Holyrood Week: Ceremony of the Keys and High School Visit

The Queen visited Greenfaulds High School, Cumbernauld, and arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, for the start of her annual week of Scottish engagements. Her Majesty was presented with the Keys of the City which she returned in the traditional Ceremony of the Keys. A Guard of Honor mounted in the Forecourt of the Palace was reviewed.

Looks like we haven't seen Victoria's Bow Brooch since...last year during Holyrood Week?! Hardly seems possible for such a popular piece. Anyway, it's a good fit to a lemon outfit full of sweet details.

After two days of badges, Her Maj makes up for it with a two brooch day. Starting out with a classic, Queen Victoria's Bow...

...and following that up with a more interesting selection, the Tudor Rose! (If you can make it out there.) This one came mysteriously on the scene in 2012 and was used regularly for a couple years. We haven't seen it since 2014.

I love the pink and blue flowers on this dress - though, as I often would, I'd lose at least one thing from the hat.

Visit to Cheshire

The Queen, accompanied by The Duchess of Sussex, visited Cheshire for a day of engagements.
Kensington Palace

A jolly away day for these two, as you knew it would be. The Queen was neon in her repeated Stewart Parvin coat and dress with a Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat; The Duchess of Sussex was elegantly blergh in Givenchy, a return to her British wedding gown designer, Clare Waight Keller.

I would be absolutely head over heels about Meghan's ensemble if it was in a more interesting color, but as I said, it is still elegant. The real feature here are her earrings. Buckingham Palace took the unusual step of confirming that they are a gift from The Queen - a gift, not a loan. They are pearl and diamond, a baby version of the button earrings worn by Her Maj on a daily basis.

Many are suspecting that these were pulled from The Queen's personal collection, but I'm not so sure; she tends to loan those pieces, so the mention of these being a gift has me wondering if they weren't purchased for Meghan. This design is so basic and so common, it will be hard to be certain unless the palace decides to confirm again.

Anyway, the design works well on Meghan. (There's a reason one pearl and one diamond in an earring is such a popular combo, there's a version for everyone!) As for Her Maj herself, she sported Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch, which we haven't seen much of this year, and it looks great on this coat.

Royal Academy of Arts Visit

The Queen visited the Royal Academy of Arts to officially open the Burlington Gardens building and mark the Academy's 250th anniversary.

Oh, I like this orange ensemble way better on the first day of Spring than I did on Christmas Day. She really pops against the gallery colors, no?

Today also brings us another delayed 2018 debut for a perennial brooch fave: Queen Victoria's Bow, making its first appearance since November.

Visit to Hull

The Queen visited Hull to mark its year as the United Kingdom's City of Culture. Her Majesty visited the Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy factory and formally opened the Allam Medical Building at the University of Hull.
Royal Family

New outfit alert! This is a "Stewart Parvin Air Force Blue cashmere coat over a silk print dress in Air Force blue, black and orange with a matching hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan," per the Press Association. Absolutely lovely, although a bit camouflaging during her visit to this medical facility...

Royal Family

There's no camouflaging Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch on that solid blue background, though, and that's a Good Thing. It looks great.

Royal Windsor Horse Show

May 10-14: The Queen attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show at Home Park, Windsor.

As she does every year, The Queen was in casual mode for several days to join the fun happening in her backyard at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Just her engagement and wedding rings and one of her black strap watches were on display for these days.

The Queen does present some of the prizes and watch a display or two, and that's when the brooches come back out to play. On Saturday, it was Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch. This coat was originally worn with a more distinctive hat - interesting to see it paired with a more typical shape now. (Another view here.)

And on Sunday, she continued to pull from Queen Victoria's legacy as Queen Victoria's 11 Pearl Brooch made its first 2017 appearance.

Audience at Buckingham Palace and Dame Vera Lynn Tribute

The Queen held an audience at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen today received Letters of Credence from Thailand's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, who is wearing a black armband (and whose wife is clad in black) as part of the continued national mourning for the October death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. I mention this because you'd be forgiven for thinking it was related to today's terrible incident near Parliament, after which the gates of Buckingham Palace were closed. (I believe the audience was completed prior to those events. Her Majesty's next scheduled event happens to be a long-planned visit to the Metropolitan Police tomorrow, to open their new headquarters building. Perhaps things will be postponed or will take on a different purpose.) UPDATE: The Queen's visit to New Scotland Yard tomorrow has been postponed.

A brooch was probably worn, though it can't be seen.

Also, The Queen also made an unofficial appearance at the London Palladium on March 18th for a concert in honor of Dame Vera Lynn's 100th birthday.
See her arrival here. She wore Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch. (h/t to Franck)

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended church at Sandringham, Norfolk. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also present.

She's back! Phew. I mean, raise your hand if you're not at least a little bit relieved to see Her Maj out and about for the first time since mid-December. (*Raises hand*) Well, she's back, and she's kicking off a new year with last year's favorite brooch.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.

And other members of the Royal Family watched from the balcony above:

The Duchess of Cornwall  wore again her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp, along with her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings. Her brooch is a regimental badge from her late father's regiment, and it formerly belonged to The Queen Mother. The Countess of Wessex also wore a regimental badge, from the Rifles.

Interestingly, The Duchess of Cambridge has been loaned another piece from The Queen's jewel vault: the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings. These earrings were created using pearls given to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift. Much like the Silver Jubilee earrings recently worn by Kate, this pair has been loaned to Sophie in the past. They've also been worn fairly recently worn by The Queen herself, who chose them for last year's Festival of Remembrance.

Pitch@Palace and Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen joined The Duke of York at an event for Pitch@Palace, which was founded by The Duke to support entrepreneurs.
Well, I guess we really are in the mood for the Ruby and Gold Flower Brooch - that's two days in a row! This is a new brooch to pair with this outfit, but she does usually go for brooches that are heavily gold with this one.

 UPDATE:
Earlier, The Queen held an audience at Buckingham Palace.

Hard to see, but a classic in action.

Visit to Ballater

The Queen visited Ballater, Aberdeenshire, near the Balmoral Estate, where she checked in on residents hit by severe flooding last December.

She's back! The Queen started to gradually end her Balmoral break with Scottish appearances, as is her tradition. We didn't even get that many Sunday church sightings during the Balmoral holiday this year, so I'm extra glad to see her back at it. (I did catalog what I could in our Balmoral Holiday 2016 post, of course.)

Holyrood Week: Visit to Dundee

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited Dundee for a day of engagements at Slessor Gardens, the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee, the Michelin tire factory, and the City Chambers.

Another classic, as Holyrood Week rolls on. Tomorrow comes the event I've been most looking forward to: the Order of the Thistle service! Cross your fingers for emeralds.

The Patron's Lunch

The Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended the Patron's Lunch celebration of her 90th birthday on The Mall.
@KensingtonRoyal
Today's color selection might not have been quite as vivid as yesterday's, but The Queen was still a bright spot on a rainy day in a cerise Karl Ludwig coat and floral dress with a matching Angela Kelly hat.

@RoyalFamily video
Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch was once again the selection of the day for the Patron's Lunch event itself, but she did have a sneaky bonus brooch surprise for those who looked very closely:

Peeking out onto The Mall from a Buckingham Palace window

Can you spot it? It's Queen Mary's Bar Brooch, a pearl and diamond number very rarely seen (perhaps not since the 1980s at this point). You can read all about it in my last post.

Engagement and Wedding Rings

@RoyalFamily
All royal hands on deck! That seems to be the motto this week. (And, good, keep it coming.) The event was packed with family members, greeting the crowds and watching the parade.

@KensingtonRoyal
With The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall dispatched to cover the local celebrations elsewhere, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry led the rest of the family. Kate continued to solidify my feelings that she should stick to simple but bold modern looks with this color blocked Roksanda dress. Suits her so well and easy to see in the crowd, so win/win.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie took the striped approach to the crowd visibility challenge. Honestly? Princess Eugenie is killing it lately. This Whistles dress is sooooo good. I can't wait to see what these two bring for Ascot. (Beatrice's skirt is from Saloni, by the way.)

@RoyalFamily
In comparison, The Countess of Wessex's Alaïa outfit could have used a little something extra. (Although any use of a designer that gets me in the mood to quote Clueless has to be worth some bonus points.)

Video: The Queen's speech
Feeling a little birthday'd out by all these recent events? Her Maj feels you. She ended her brief speech with this: "How I will feel if people are still singing Happy Birthday in December, remains to be seen."

But get your second wind, because there's much left to come. Garter Day is tomorrow, followed by five glorious days of Ascot!

(Updated) The Queen's 90th Birthday Service and Governors-General Luncheon

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh - celebrating his 95th birthday today - and other members of the Royal Family, attended a service of National Thanksgiving in celebration of her 90th birthday at St. Paul's Cathedral, London.

You can find a full fashion round up at the other blog, but over here: THAT BROOCH. Oh, Her Maj went big for her big birthday, busting out the Richmond Brooch from Queen Mary's stash. She's only worn it a few times, the last being in 2014. She still did not choose to use the brooch's optional pearl pendant, but it was the perfect accompaniment to her sunshine yellow Angela Kelly outfit, which included motifs that seemed a nod towards the design of the Richmond. She also upped her game with the larger of her pearl and diamond button earring options from Queen Mary.

Chief among the 50-plus members of the Royal Family in attendance were The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, of course. Repeating a Bruce Oldfield outfit and Philip Treacy hat, Camilla wore the smaller of her diamond clasp pearl chokers and some of her favorite bug brooches. This is a fabulous outfit, though rather understated on her scale - jewelry and all.

Later, a luncheon and reception was held at Buckingham Palace for visiting Governors-General. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, and The Duchess of Cornwall were in attendance.

For later, a shout-out to her fellow longest reigning sovereign, Queen Victoria. This is already the fifth appearance of Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch for the year, so it's well on its way to earning a spot on the 2016 list of favorite brooches (again). For The Duchess of Cornwall, she appears to have simply removed her coat and its brooches, sticking to her pearl choker for ornamentation.

Royal Maundy Service

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, attended the Royal Maundy Service at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
The traveling Maundy Thursday service has taken The Queen to most of the major cathedrals in the country, so it makes it an extra special treat to hold it right at home in her 90th birthday year. (Three cheers for no extra travel time ahead of the Easter weekend, right? If I was approaching 90, I'd consider it a downright jumpy clap-worthy moment.) The last time St. George's Chapel hosted the Royal Maundy service was in 1959.
Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch made its fourth appearance for the year, standing up well against the tweed of this Karl Ludwig outfit (with matching Angela Kelly hat).

Commonwealth Day

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh joined other members of the Royal Family at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day Observance Service.
This is the second year in a row to feature a Commonwealth-associated brooch, following last year's Singapore brooch. (Recent years have seen her more likely to select a piece without strong specific ties.) The renewed life of this Australian opal brooch is an interesting turn of events; after many years leaving her opal pieces largely unworn, this 1947 wedding gift has now appeared for four years running.

Note: We'll be covering the other family members (well, okay, one other family member) on the other blog.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were present at a Reception given by the Commonwealth Secretary-General at Marlborough House.
A more popular choice reigned for the later reception, with one of Queen Victoria's Bow Brooches and a textured pink suit with Pretty in Pink written all over it.

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended church at Sandringham, Norfolk. The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence were also present.
Another round of the brooch guessing game: it looks like we have Queen Victoria's Bow Brooch here (there is another photo in the article linked in the tweet above).

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held several audiences at Buckingham Palace.
Add another color to the rainbow of dresses that coordinate exceptionally well with this room. Orange and Queen Victoria's Bow is a throwback to Christmas 2013; in fact, this looks like the dress that was under that coat.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by The King and Queen of the Netherlands and other members of the Royal Family, attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.
As she does each year, The Queen selected one of her of diamond bow brooches to fasten her poppies for today's service at the Cenotaph. Queen Victoria's Brooch is actually not a regular selection here, because she often goes for one of the larger bow options. She wore the larger set of Queen Mary's diamond and pearl earrings, which is also not a usual selection for this event.

Also unusual: The Queen invited another monarch to the ceremony. King Willem-Alexander was invited to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.

Het Koninklijk Huis Facebook / BBC screencap
The note, signed by both King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, says: "In remembrance of the British men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. The Kingdom of the Netherlands will be forever grateful for the British role in its liberation."

Queen Máxima cut a striking figure in her large black hat as she joined Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duchess of Cambridge, and The Countess of Wessex to watch the ceremony from the balcony above. (We'll talk more about this coat business tomorrow on the other blog.)

On another balcony, Princess Michael of Kent, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and Princess Alexandra of Kent looked on. The Duchess and Princess Alexandra both wore military badges.

Ministry of Defence/Crown Copyright
In another first for the day, Prince Harry laid his own wreath. Though Harry has laid a wreath on behalf of his father in the past, this was the first time he has done so in his own right. He joined The Duke of York and The Duke of Cambridge, above.

Ministry of Defence/Crown Copyright
Apart from The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, other members of the Royal Family laid wreaths in groups this year to help shorten the ceremony, after discussions about cutting down the amount of time veterans are required to stand during the event. Above, The Duke of Kent, The Princess Royal, and The Earl of Wessex give their salutes together after placing their wreaths.

And finally, after the Cenotaph ceremony, Prince William took the veterans' salute at Horse Guards Parade (another first, I believe).
