Royal Ascot, Day 5

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.

It's the last day of Royal Ascot and at last I have an outfit to call my favorite of Ascot 2019. It's not The Queen - sorry, ma'am - but she was looking garden fresh indeed as she gave her mother's shell brooch its first outing of the year. (I think my favorite of The Queen's Ascot outfits this year was Day 4.)

No, my Ascot fave this year has to goes to the blue-clad beauty Her Maj was chatting to above, her granddaughter-in-law Autumn Phillips. In a JUMPSUIT, no less! I liked it even before I saw this absolutely boss #TeamShades pic, for the record. Easy, breezy, and a chic take on the Ascot dress code.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.
BBC

As she did last year, The Queen watched the Cenotaph ceremony from one of the Foreign Office balconies while The Prince of Wales laid  her wreath. This year she broke with her tradition of wearing one of her bow brooches to hold her cluster of poppies. She wore The Queen Mother's Shell Brooch instead. The jewelry choices, frivolous as they may seem to discuss given the occasion, can often add additional insight. That is certainly the case with The Queen's brooch choice today.

We've seen The Queen wear pieces from her mother's collection multiple times for war remembrance events. In the year of the armistice centenary, choosing one of The Queen Mother's favorites seems an additional nod to the four Bowes-Lyon brothers that fought in the First World War, one of whom was killed in action.

This particular brooch offers yet more significance of its own; it was designed by Lord Courtauld-Thomson (its longer name is the Courtauld Thomson Scallop-shell Brooch), who was Chief Commissioner for the British Red Cross during the First World War. The jewel was made in 1919. (As always, full stories on jewel history can be found in the links below.)

The Queen was joined on her balcony The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her jewelry from last year's service; her badge belonged to The Queen Mother and is of special significance to Camilla because her late father served with the 12th Lancers.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore her Poppy Collection Women of the First World War Brooch and repeated pearl earrings by Cassandra Goad.

The Duchess of Sussex joined Frau Elke Büdenbender, wife of the German president, on another balcony. "Federal German President His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier laid a wreath on behalf of the German people. It is the first time since the Cenotaph was inaugurated in 1920 that a representative of Germany took part in the National Service of Remembrance and his attendance symbolises the peace and friendship that exists between our two countries today," according to the Ministry of Defence.

The Countess of Wessex was on another balcony with Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. She wore a Rifles badge, because she is Royal Colonel of the 5th Battalion. The Countess of Wessex Blog identified her ceramic poppy brooch; it was made by and given to her by the visually impaired students at St. Vincent's School. The students make these poppy brooches as a campaign to leave "a lasting legacy for those who lost their sight in the Great War." The Countess regularly supports charities for the blind and visually impaired. It's a personal cause for her since her daughter, Lady Louise, was born with an eye condition.

The Duke of Cambridge, The Duke of Sussex, The Duke of York, The Earl of Wessex, The Princess Royal, The Duke of Kent, and Prince Michael of Kent all laid wreaths as well. The Duke of Edinburgh's (who was not present at the ceremony today) was laid by his equerry, a Captain in the Grenadier Guards.

Royal Ascot, Day 4

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.

Her Maj is here to prove once again that she can wear alllllll of the colors, just in case you had any doubt left. Day 4's ensemble is by Angela Kelly. Also once again, she's bringing her mother's memory with her to the races today, wearing the Shell Brooch.

It's the weekend and royal attendance at Ascot tends to taper off right about now, so let's take care of the other attendees here:

Princess Beatrice was joined by both her parents for a family day out at the races. I LOVE THAT HAT. Brim for daaaaays! It's by Sarah Cant and her dress is from The Fold.

Sarah Cant Gloriosa hat
Could have had a better dress pairing, I would say, but it's a shape she's clearly in love with as she wore a similar one in pink for Trooping the Colour. Sarah, Duchess of York opted for a navy Roland Mouret dress and a classic Philip Treacy hat.

I think Princess Eugenie handed off the floral baton yesterday to Princess Haya. I find this a more successful hat pairing, the solid black not competing with the big pattern. It was another successful day at the races for the Dubai royals and their Godolphin team, with Princess Haya and Sheikha Jalila accepting the prize for their winner in the King Edward VII Stakes.

CHOGM Opening Ceremony, Reception, and Audiences

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Buckingham Palace. Afterward, The Queen and The Prince of Wales hosted a reception for the new Commonwealth Heads of Government.

A big chunk of diamonds from the late Queen Mother's collection made its 2018 debut for the CHOGM Opening today. This Shell Brooch is seriously sparkly, observe while you check out all the rest of the royal family members at the ceremony:

The brooch kept its place on Her Maj's interesting skirt suit - color strategically selected so as not to echo the colors of any one country's flag too closely, I expect - as she and The Prince of Wales hosted a reception afterward.

Also today, The Queen received the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, for a private audience at Buckingham Palace.

Oh, and a tricky one to follow up  I see the Diamond Rose of York Brooch, and the rest of you see about seven different things, based on your comments.

State Visit from Spain, Welcome Ceremony

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh welcomed King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain at the beginning of their State Visit to the United Kingdom.
House of HM the King

The Queen has hosted state visits from King Felipe VI's parents and from his maternal grandparents during her reign. A triple generation State Visit tradition! Just one of the fun facts you get when one of the world's longest-reigning monarchs meets up with one of the world's newest monarchs.

House of HM the King

The classic Shell Brooch was on duty today, shining brightly from her magenta coat. Her Majesty matched both His Majesty (nice tie work, Felipe!) and the other Her Majesty, Queen Letizia's yellow ensemble coordinating nicely with the yellow accents on this Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat.

Royal Family

The queenly pair really stepped up the coordination game once inside Buckingham Palace for lunch and a gaze around the Royal Collection's special State Visit exhibition, because the yellow flowers on QEII's dress really stand out. As usual, the brooch was transferred off the coat to the dress beneath.

Engagement and Wedding Rings

The Duchess of Cornwall was an array of her usual favorite jewels and her usual favorite ivory shade and her usual favorite statement hats ("statement" being an understatement in this case) for her part in the welcome ceremony. Her Diamond Stick Insect Brooch is said to have been a gift from her late father, and it is one of her favorites; we have not yet covered it here.

Funeral of Countess Mountbatten of Burma and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen, joined by other members of the Royal Family, attended the funeral of Countess Mountbatten of Burma at St. Paul's Church, Knightsbridge.

Several members of the Royal Family gathered to say goodbye to Patricia Knatchbull, who was Prince Philip's first cousin, The Queen's third cousin, and The Prince of Wales' godmother. The group included Her Majesty (who rarely attends funerals herself) plus The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of York, The Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, The Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Lady Sarah Chatto, and Lady Helen Taylor.

Also today, The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

That makes two brooches for the day, and they're both pretty big ones. For those of you that wanted some Cambridge emerald action at Ascot, here it is, just a few days late.

Easter Service

The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended Easter Service in Windsor.

Her Maj's coat is bright as an Easter egg as usual. I'm surprised by the dress underneath, I wouldn't have guessed it went with this coat if we hadn't seen them together. The brooch, on the other hand, is no surprise; the Queen Mother's Shell Brooch has been worn for Easter service a couple times in the past.

Enjoy your Easter, and we'll see you at the other blog tomorrow to check out the rest of the family fashions!

90th Birthday Commemorative Stamps, and a New Portrait

A commemorative stamp for Her Majesty's 90th birthday, featuring a special family portrait, has been released.
Ranald Mackechnie/Royal Mail
Nothing like a four generation portrait to mark a grand occasion! The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, and Prince George posed for photographer Ranald Mackechnie in summer 2015 in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace. The portrait was taken for a set of commemorative stamps from the Royal Mail, hence why Prince George is standing on some foam blocks above. That's a little behind the scenes look at what it took to get everybody lined up just right:
Royal Mail
The Telegraph has a fascinating look into the secret shoot and the precision the required by the photographer.

The coordination is perfect, not only in their matched blue clothes, but in the jewels. This is technically a four generation portrait of current and future monarchs, but The Queen stretched it to five generations by selecting a favorite brooch of her late mother's, the Queen Mother's Shell Brooch. A touching gesture, and just what The Queen does best.

The Royal Mail have released a full range of official stamps for the big birthday:

You can purchase the stamps here online.

The Queen is in fact due to visit the Royal Mail Windsor on Wednesday, to mark the 500th anniversary of the Postal Service.

Buckingham Palace Garden Party and Wellington Memorial Service

The Queen, accompanied The Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family, hosted a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
Polish up those top hats, it's garden party season! And with cheery yellows and pinks and blues on the top ladies in attendance, it really does feel like a lovely spring day in the garden.

Hmm...I think she heard us wondering why she didn't wear a brooch from The Queen Mother at the VE Day service.

Also in attendance at the garden party was The Duchess of Cornwall, wearing one heck of a hat. She's worn shapes like that in creams and beiges and pulled them off spectacularly, but my my, they look soooo much bigger in a strong color, no? Anyway, her jewel roundup: A diamond butterfly brooch which I believe is having its public debut today, her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Small Diamond Clasp, and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings.

Earlier in the day, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were among members of the Royal Family in attendance at a memorial service for the late Duke of Wellington.

It's rare that Her Majesty attends memorials or funerals, but she made an exception for a Knight of the Garter and holder of one very famous title. She wore the Kent Amethyst Brooch, as you can see in the comments. The Duchess of Cornwall was wearing the same butterfly brooch and earrings she wore to the garden party, with her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp. She also had a watch, some of her everyday bracelets, and her engagement/wedding rings in view.

State Visit from Ireland Farewell, and Newbury Races

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh bid farewell to President and Mrs. Higgins at Windsor Castle at the close of the Irish State Visit.
I'm surprised we didn't see any appearance of the brooch she received on her visit to Ireland in 2011, but instead the last brooch of the trip was one from the Queen Mother's collection. No complaints, though - this was state visit was quite a feast for those of us with sparkly interests (a new brooch, a parade of emeralds, and even an extra event).

Engagement and Wedding Rings

And later in the day...
The Queen attended Newbury Races at Newbury Racecourse.
She lost the Shell Brooch, donned one we haven't seen since this blog started, added an unfortunate hat, and indulged in one of her favorite pastimes. Click here for photos from the Daily Mail.

Royal Ascot, Day Five

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.
And that's it! Ascot is over, and the Queen's going out in her Wedgwood best, complete with diamonds and pearls.
I'm quite pleased with the Ascot brooch show this year, aren't you? Something old, something new (and something kinda new), something borrowed (from the Queen Mother's look, that is), and something blue.

Order of Merit Service

The Queen, along with the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales, attended a service for members of the Order of Merit at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace and afterwards gave a luncheon.

I thought it had been a while since we'd seen this brooch - for a time, it seemed a big favorite - and sure enough, it's been almost exactly a year since its last appearance!

The Queen Mother’s Shell Brooch

The Queen Mother's Shell Brooch
This brooch has made a sudden surge of appearances on the Queen in the last decade. And why wouldn’t it, really, the thing’s just lousy with diamonds. The Queen Mother’s Shell Brooch (official name: the Courtauld Thomson Scallop-Shell Brooch) is, unsurprisingly, another gem out of the late Queen Mother’s jewel box that has found a new home amongst the Queen’s trinkets. It takes the shape of a shell made of solid rows of diamonds with a single pearl cradled at the base and strings of diamonds of varying lengths suspended underneath.
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
It was designed by Lord Courtauld-Thomson and was made in 1919. It was left to Queen Elizabeth, the future Queen Mother, in 1944 by his sister, Winifred Hope Thomson. The Queen Mother wore it often; most notably, she wore it during her 100th birthday celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth II
From all the jewels the Queen inherited when her mother passed away in 2002, this is one that has made it into regular rotation. It’s had several memorable outings, including the unveiling of the Queen Mother’s statue, Zara Phillips’ wedding, and the 60th anniversary of King George VI’s death. It seems to be not just a tribute to her mother, but something she actually likes.

60th Accession Anniversary

The Queen marked the anniversary of her accession to the throne in King's Lynn, Norfolk, near the Sandringham Estate, visiting the Town Hall and Dersingham Infant and Nursery School.
Well, I think that takes the prize for Most Adorable Appearance of the Year.
