Christmas Staff Luncheon

The Queen hosted a pre-Christmas lunch for close staff at the Goring Hotel, London.

I think some pearls would have been splendid on this light blue suit, but the Palm Leaf - in just its third appearance for the year - does the job well as always.

Meeting at Windsor Castle

This is the outfit The Queen wore to last year's "dressed down" State Opening of Parliament. At the time, the hat was accessorized with yellow-centered blue flowers, making it look distinctly reminiscent of the European flag. I guess that feedback made it back to the palace, because the hat has since been redone, a bow replacing the flowers. Her Maj chose her mother's paisley brooch for today's event, echoing the swirling pattern of this blue fabric. And that's all we have to say about today.

Royal Windsor Horse Show

May 9-13: The Queen attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show at Home Park, Windsor.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show is mainly an opportunity to see The Queen in casual mode - this year's casual outfits included a Two Strand Pearl Necklace, Pearl Stud Earrings, one of her Black Strap Watches, and her Engagement and Wedding Rings - but a few brooches also manage to get in on the action.

And it looks like we have a third brooch here, at what I suppose is some of the evening entertainment. Maybe The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch, hard to be sure.

HMS Ocean Decommissioning Ceremony

The Queen, Lady Sponsor, attended the decommissioning ceremony of the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean at HMNB Devonport.

Interesting that The Queen chose not to wear her HMS Ocean Brooch today; she received it in 2015, and it has only been worn on one occasion. Instead, the diamond Palm Leaf adorned this pink outfit (which I enjoy, possibly minus the button situation). As always, though, she is carefully coordinated for contrast in a sea of uniforms.

Order of the British Empire Centenary Service and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen, as Sovereign of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, with The Duke of Edinburgh, Grand Master, attended a Service of the Order celebrating its 100th anniversary at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Royal Family

Welp, friends, I regret to inform you that we have a missed tiara opportunity on our hands. The Queen is Sovereign of the Order of the British Empire. As such, she has an extra grand mantle (robe) to wear for these services - and with all that regalia, she wears a tiara. (Which was on display when this service was last held, in 2012. See more on her OBE gear here.)

Except this year, while The Duke of Edinburgh and others wore their collars and mantles, Her Maj decided to skip it. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told the Daily Mail that it was The “Queen’s personal choice to wear day dress.” Her mantle has a train and requires a page boy to manage; though it's not as heavy as the mantles she uses for other orders, it would still make it harder to get around, and I'm guessing that's the reason for the downgrade.

So instead, we got a Stewart Parvin coat and dress with a Rachel Trevor Morgan hat and the Queen Mother's Diamond Palm Leaf Brooch. I love her coats that just fasten at the top to allow a look at the dress underneath, even if I am smarting a bit from the loss of a tiara.

Missed this one yesterday, and it's a rare spot, too. She's wearing the New Zealand Fern Brooch! We haven't seen The Queen wear this since 2012; since then, The Duchess of Cambridge has worn it and it did appear in a portrait. The Queen also received the High Commissioner of New Zealand yesterday, so this was no random brooch selection.

Order of Merit Service

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended a service for members of the Order of Merit at the Chapel Royal, St. James' Palace and afterwards gave a reception.

Lucky they had this engagement scheduled for today, because the world - the hysteria-prone social media world, specifically - apparently required evidence that Prince Philip is still kicking. What I wouldn't give for his take on the panic that followed leaked news of a staff meeting at Buckingham Palace this morning, including people speculating that news of The Duke's death was imminent (despite all this occurring just hours after he'd been in fine form on an engagement yesterday).

Royal Family
So yes, the big news today is that the 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh will retire from public duties in the autumn. I'd say that's a well-deserved rest for a man that's logged 22,191 solo engagements since 1952, according to the palace. In the mean time, he's still got it:

Guest at today's reception: "I'm sorry to hear that you're standing down."
Prince Philip: "Well I can't stand up much longer!"

National Army Museum Reopening

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duke of Kent, Patron, reopened the National Army Museum, Chelsea, London, following its refurbishment.

We've previously seen this outfit worn with Prince Albert's Sapphire Brooch, and I find that I'm sorely missing a sapphire this time around. The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch disappears into the background on this coat, which is a sad thing to happen to a cluster of diamonds.

There's a case to be made that the real outfit of the day came in the form of a flashback, anyway.

Richard Watt/MOD Crown Copyright 2017

Her Maj came face to face with her own uniform from her days as an Honorary Brigadier in the Women's Royal Army Corps, 1949-1953, which is on display at the museum. Take a detailed look below:

She's been back but now she's back back, you know, because this is her first official public engagement of the year. I kind of wish this hat hadn't come back with her, but that's another issue. (I still like her in pink anyway.)

Visit to Poundbury

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, visited Poundbury, The Prince of Wales' urban development.

If you're unveiling a statue of The Queen Mother - which she was, at Queen Mother Square - then you wear one of The Queen Mother's brooches. Done and done. She also visited a supermarket, because sometimes you have to throw the caption writers a bone.

The Duchess of Cornwall sported one of her signature pearl chokers and had her own photo op later in the day, when she pulled a pint of "The Duchess" beer while opening an inn named The Duchess Of Cornwall.

Holyrood Week: Opening of the Scottish Parliament

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, officially opened the Fifth Session of the Scottish Parliament, and delivered an address to the Parliament.

How to step around a sticky political situation without getting sticky, the queenly way: "We all live and work in an increasingly complex and demanding world, where events and developments can, and do, take place at remarkable speed; and retaining the ability to stay calm and collected can at times be hard. As this Parliament has successfully demonstrated over the years, one hallmark of leadership in such a fast-moving world is allowing sufficient room for quiet thinking and contemplation, which can enable deeper, cooler consideration of how challenges and opportunities can be best addressed."

Video: The Queen's speech

Add to that an outfit in a truly tranquil shade and a brooch from the original Keep Calm and Carry On era, and you've got a mission accomplished. It's odd that her lapel so clearly covers the brooch, but it isn't the first time that's happened to this jewel.

Royal Welsh New Colours Presentation

The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief, presented New Colours to The Royal Welsh at Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, Wales.
The Palm Leaf Brooch continues its quest to be the favorite brooch of the year, but this week continues to be about kids taking center stage: a dapper little gentleman with the Dubai racing party shook The Queen's hand with perfect top hat-removing manners at the races this weekend, and now this little charmer has a little run in with a soldier. Her posy was already successfully delivered to Her Maj and all was well, luckily!

Royal Windsor Horse Show 2015

The Queen makes several informal visits to the Royal Windsor Horse Show on the private grounds at Windsor Castle during the show's duration (13-17 May this year). Appearances at this year's show will be compiled in this entry, which will be updated as the week goes on.

May 13

Opening day brought both The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall out to play. Pearl stud earrings, a double strand of pearls, engagement and wedding rings, and a leather strap watch with a round face for HM; Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings, Gold Chain Bracelet with Multi-Color Stones, Cross and Eye Chain Bracelet, a watch, and engagement and wedding rings on show for HRH.

May 15

Not much to show for jewels today, but a jolly day with extra appearances by The Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise, plus The Duke of York and The King of Bahrain.

May 16

Another standard appearance in the day. The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch came out later for award presentations, and a longer double strand of pearls for the evening event.

May 17
And finally, she presented more prizes wearing Queen Victoria's 11 Pearl Brooch

Gallipoli Centenary Commemorations

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duke of Cambridge, attended services to commemorate the centenary of the World War I Gallipoli Campaign and the sacrifices of Commonwealth troops, particularly those of the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) forces.
Commemorations are happening around the world today, and in London, The Queen attended first a ceremony at the Cenotaph where she laid a wreath, followed by a service at Westminster Abbey. In addition to The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of Cambridge, and her Lady-in Waiting, Her Majesty was accompanied by her Australian private secretary Samantha Cohen.

She wore the Palm Leaf, a.k.a. Paisley, Brooch from her mother's jewel collection today, always an appropriate selection for events like this.
Hat switch! A smaller brimmed black hat was a more practical choice for the outdoor Cenotaph ceremony, before she switched into the wider brim white and black hat that belongs with this outfit.
Three Strand Pearl Necklace (Mostly covered by jacket)

Other royals joining in other commemoration ceremonies around the world:

The Prince of Wales and Prince Harry have been in Turkey on the Gallipoli peninsula yesterday and today, where several events have been held.

Joined by world leaders including the Prime Minister of Australia, they've met relatives of veterans, attended a dawn service, and even received some gifts from widows of Australian Gallipoli veterans.

The Duke of Kent traveled to Australia, where he joined commemorations at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence attended a dawn service in London at Wellington Arch.

And finally, beyond the British royal family, Denmark's Crown Princess Mary joined a service in Copenhagen today. Mary, of course, is from Australia. Click here for a video, or here for an article and picture (in Danish).

State Visit from Mexico, Welcome Ceremony and State Banquet

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh welcomed The President of the United Mexican States, Señor Enrique Peña Nieto, accompanied by Señora Angélica Rivera de Peña, at the beginning of his State Visit to the United Kingdom.
For more: Express article, Daily Mail photos, Zimbio gallery.
Well, isn't this a jolly start to the first state visit of the year? I think we have an official front runner for this year's favorite brooch competition now, with the paisley/palm leaf/whateva making its third appearance. Interestingly, though the brooch was in its standard position on her coat outside (above), when she moved inside, she switched it up:

Instead of going brooch-less (perish the thought!) she moved it over to the other side to avoid her dress decoration.
Engagement and Wedding Rings

Also getting in on the brooch game was The Duchess of Cornwall, who greeted the President and First Lady at the start of the day wearing her gorgeous pansy brooches, always a favorite for her when she wears purple outfits. (And you know I approve of that.)

And then: State Banquet time! The very best time, of course.

The Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, gave a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace for The President of the United Mexican States.

Diamonds and white, of course. But I do note that this is the first time since this blog began (2012) that we've seen Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara worn for a current event, and I did not think it had been that long.

Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara
Diamond Pear-Shaped Pendant Fringe Necklace
Grand Collar of the Order of the Aztec Eagle
Diamond Cluster Earrings
Baguette and Brilliant Bracelet
Evening Watch

Extra kudos to the First Lady, who looks absolutely fantastic (just as she did for the welcome ceremony).

UPDATE #1:
A few more photos from the banquet have come out.

Looks like we have the mysterious Diamond Cluster Earrings on The Queen. And below, you can juuuuust see that The Duchess of Cornwall appears to be wearing the Greville Tiara (no shock there). She is in her normal spot, right next to the President at the head table.

UPDATE #2:
Video of The Queen's speech!

You have to respect the wall of sparkle that is the Kokoshnik.
The video gives us a better view of Camilla, who is wearing her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp and her favorite pair of pearl earrings, and a back view of The Princess Royal, who appears to be wearing the Meander Tiara. You can also spot The Duchess of Gloucester, wearing red along one of the side tables, but not a good enough view to make out her tiara so far. (Per the Court Circular, the following members of the family were present in addition to Her Maj and the DoE: The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of York, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and The Duke of Kent.)

Investiture and Audience at Windsor Castle, and Christening

The Queen held an Investiture at Windsor Castle. Her Majesty also received His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams for an audience upon his appointment as Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda.
For more: ITV video, Zimbio gallery.
She gives her traditional gift, a portrait of herself...and receives one in return! Gotta love that.
The audience gives us a return of the Palm Leaf a.k.a. Paisley Brooch, which has only had one other appearance this year. The investiture likely has the same.

Also, last weekend, The Queen attended the christening of her great-granddaughter Mia Tindall.

Westminster School Visit

The Queen officially opened the new sports hall during a visit to Westminster School.
For more: ITNSource video, Zimbio gallery, Express article.
Mint is not a favorite of mine, so this ensemble (a Peter Enrione outfit and Angela Kelly hat) is one I'm not so sure about, but she did match the school, and even the curtain drawn to unveil the plaque was pink. Anyway, we haven't seen this brooch of the Queen Mother's in over a year according to my list, which is surprising as I still think of it as a favorite.

State Visit from the UAE, Welcome Ceremony and State Luncheon

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh welcomed the President of the United Arab Emirates , His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at the beginning of his State Visit to the United Kingdom. The welcome was followed by a State Luncheon at Windsor Castle.

This state visit's a bummer: no state banquet, only a state luncheon. That means no tiaras. Le sigh.
