Holyrood Week: Audiences and Garden Party

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of York, The Earl of Forfar, and The Princess Royal, attended a Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Guess what time it is, folks: NEW BROOCH TIME! (New to me, at least.) This is the first "new" piece we've seen this year.

Duke of York

It's an unusual pick for The Queen, with black and pink opaque stones in paisley shapes accented by what appear to be diamonds. I don't really know any information about it at this time, but you can click the brooch name below for more thoughts.

It's not just a NEW brooch day, it's also a TWO brooch day, as Her Maj sported something different for her audiences earlier in the day. I very nearly thought this one was also a new brooch, thanks to a dress pattern that practically erases the diamonds in this brooch. It turned out to be Queen Mary's Russian Brooch - but worn with the sapphire on top, rather than the sapphire on the bottom as we usually see The Queen wear it.

GCHQ Centenary

The Queen marked the centenary of GCHQ (Government Communications Head Quarters) at Watergate House, London.

Practically need a side view to spy Queen Mary's Russian Brooch peeking out from under her lapel, but as it happens, a side view is the best way to appreciate the size of these stones anyway. The pearls are looking like they have more space between strands than usual today, so I wish we also had a clasp view.

Royal Ascot, Day 1

The Queen honored Ascot Races with her presence today.

This yellow Angela Kelly outfit with blue accents isn't the only yellow with blue outfit in The Queen's wardrobe and it has been suggested here in the past - such as Ascot Day 1 in 2016, in fact - that she try out a sapphire brooch on the yellow background. Her Maj has heard you, and she's game. I like this version of giving us something interesting at Ascot; Queen Mary's Rusisan Brooch isn't anything especially rare (we saw it twice last year), but a shake up of the obvious color pairings is another way to surprise.

She shared a carriage with a rather chic-looking Princess Anne (shown here in a textbook example of a "like mother, like daughter" photo), who sported a large brooch of her own. This gold and diamond number has been in her jewel vault for decades and is often attributed to Andrew Grima.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held an audience at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen should casually wield a sword in all her photo ops, don't you agree? (She is, of course, about to knight the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, Sir Robert Dadae, at this moment.)

Anyway, brooch stuff: thankfully, the sapphire of Queen Mary's Russian Brooch makes its presence known even on a floral background.

She was at it yesterday too, but there's no brooch glimpse at all. Womp womp.

Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Unveiling

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and other members of the Royal Family attended the unveiling and dedication of the Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial, Victoria Embankment Gardens, London. The memorial honors "the contributions by Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and all UK citizens who were deployed in the Gulf region, Iraq and Afghanistan from 1990-2015."

The scene stealer of the day is probably the toddler who had more interest in having a little fit (i.e., in being a toddler) than in presenting a bouquet to The Queen, which certainly seems to have amused The Duke of Edinburgh. As has been said many times, the royals tend to enjoy it when things don't go according to plan.

But you can't miss Her Maj, resplendent in blue. Queen Mary's Russian Brooch is always a treat to spot, and I love the angle you in the pic below, displaying the depth of the brooch. The showcase stones really do stick out from their diamond setting.

Honourable Artillery Company Visit and Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

It seems we have no brooch here - rare, but it happens. Prince Philip was on hand for one of the day's audiences, greeting the President of Germany, Joachim Gauck. The President attended the Battle of Jutland centenary events, which Philip missed due to a medical ailment. The Duke expressed his disappointment, telling the German president, "I want to apologize for not being there."

No Brooch

Also today, The Queen, Captain General, visited the Honourable Artillery Company and unveiled a bronze bust of herself commissioned to honor her as the longest serving Captain General of the Company. Prince Michael of Kent, Royal Honorary Colonel, and Princess Michael of Kent were also present.

I assumed we'd have another regimental brooch on our hands today, but I must admit I'm quite glad to see this instead. We haven't seen Queen Mary's Russian Brooch since it made a couple of appearances in 2012, one of which was on this same outfit.

Investiture at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held an Investiture at Buckingham Palace. Among the honors given was a knighthood for Kenneth Branagh.

HM is positively sparkling, though I can't quite make out the brooch very well. Thoughts? Thank you to Jelena and Sosika for pointing out this is probably Queen Mary's Russian Brooch. (Also: Kenneth Branagh! Yay!)

Epsom Derby

The Queen, along with other members of the Royal Family, honored Epsom Races with her presence.
Bit of a slow start to the big Jubilee weekend, diamond-wise, but we'll be picking up speed shortly.

Queen Mary's Russian Brooch

Queen Mary's Russian Brooch
Relatively small compared to other brooches in the Queen's collection, Queen Mary's Russian Brooch has a square cabochon sapphire and a square-cut diamond surrounded by smaller diamonds with two small scrolls.
Queen Mary
It was, as the name suggests, one of Queen Mary's many jewels. It was a gift from Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia for Mary's wedding to the future George V in 1893. Marie Feodorovna was Queen Alexandra's sister and the groom's aunt. Mary would later acquire more of the Empress' jewels from her children after revolution ended the monarchy in Russia and forced them to flee.
Queen Elizabeth
The Queen inherited the brooch in 1953 when Queen Mary died. Though the size and shape could allow its user to be creative with its use, the Queen sticks to wearing it pinned vertically as she does with the rest of her brooches, with the sapphire most often on the bottom, and usually on a blue outfit.
