Church at Balmoral

July 23: The Queen attended services at Crathie Church, Balmoral.

The Balmoral break has begun! The Queen will stay on another property on the estate until the castle closes to the public on July 31st, after which time she'll officially take up residence at the castle and we'll officially start our annual big Balmoral break post to gather all other sightings. Until then, I believe I spy the petite Greville Scroll on its first 2017 appearance.

London Zoo Lion Exhibit Opening

The Queen, Patron of the Zoological Society of London, and The Duke of Edinburgh visited the London Zoo to open the Land of the Lions exhibit. The Queen opened the previous lion enclosure at the zoo forty years ago.
For some engagements more than others, you get the feeling that every single person involved in the planning was thinking, "Oooh, this will be a good photo op...", you know? And a good engagement overall, of course; they couldn't stop peeking behind themselves as the lions roared during the presentation.

One of Her Maj's jauntiest hats was on tap for the occasion, plus the (relatively small) Greville Scroll Brooch. We haven't seen this one since 2014, though I'm sure it gets plenty of undocumented use.

We must give the DoE his recognition too - check out his panda tie! Sure, it's a WWF tie, so that's all very appropriate for the occasion. But still, you gotta love a guy that makes sure he wears his panda tie for a trip to the zoo.

Buckingham Palace Garden Party

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of York, hosted a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for the Not Forgotten Association.
We haven't seen this brooch in action since 2011, by my count - far too long for such a luscious group of diamonds to be neglected! Thank goodness Her Maj is in a mood to delight this year.

Updated to add: Also today, the Queen held audiences (click here), wearing the Greville Scroll Brooch. One of the people she received was the new High Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Australia, so maybe that inspired her wattle choice for the garden party.

Buckingham Palace Garden Party and Investiture

The Queen invested the Duke of Edinburgh with the Order of New Zealand in the presence of the High Commissioner for New Zealand at Buckingham Palace. Later, she hosted a garden party, accompanied by other members of the royal family.

Uh oh. Following today's business, the DoE was "admitted to the London Clinic for an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations." The palace says he could be there for two weeks, which means he would miss some of the biggest events of the year, including Trooping the Colour, the Order of the Garter ceremony, and Royal Ascot - not to mention his 92nd birthday. Get well soon, Phil. (Click here for another article on today's events.)
On a happier note, the Queen wore the Flame Lily Brooch again (for the garden party, following the petite Greville Scroll - which practically disappeared into her floral dress - for the Order of New Zealand presentation). I always forget how much I adore that delicate piece of artwork until she sports it, and then I fall in love all over again.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen received the Ambassador from the Republic of Lithuania and the High Commissioner for the Republic of Seychelles at Buckingham Palace.
Glad to reaffirm that she's back on her feet with more meetings at home, even if it is with an unfortunately placed contrasting stripe.

The Greville Scroll Brooch

The Greville Scroll Brooch
This petite trinket is a scroll of diamonds centered around three pearls and set in platinum. One of the interesting things learned from Hugh Roberts' book The Queen's Diamonds was just how extensive the Greville bequest was (these are the jewels of Mrs. Ronald Greville, left to the Queen Mother in 1942) - and this brooch was a part of it. Mrs. Greville had it made by Cartier using some of her own stones in 1929.
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother
The third pearl is actually a drop pearl, but it seems to be worn with the drop on top mostly. The brooch passed to the Queen after the Queen Mother's death in 2002, and the Queen has worn it a few times since.
Personally, I think the Queen Mum had it right when she tried this out on her hat - it's a little small, compared to some of the other brooches in use, and so it makes for a nice secondary brooch, perhaps something to use to fasten the back of a sash in the evening.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen received the Ambassador from Poland and the High Commissioner of Samoa at Buckingham Palace.
I'm squinting...and magnifying...and I do believe we have ourselves a new-to-the-blog brooch.
