Chatham House Prizegiving, Audiences at Buckingham Palace, and Church at Windsor Castle

The Queen attended the 2019 Chatham House Prizegiving event at Chatham House, London. Earlier in the day, she held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

The Small Pink and Diamond Brooch was the definite selection for the evening's event...

...and it was my first thought for the day, although it looks like that could be something of a different shape in the end. Two outfits does usually mean two different brooches.

No question here, though: the Flower Basket, on just its second appearance for the year.

It's Easter and The Queen's 93rd birthday today! She's celebrating by bringing back her old favorite Flower Basket Brooch. Surprisingly, we haven't seen this one since September 2017, the longest period of absence it's had since this site started counting. It picks up both the pinks and the blues in Her Maj's outfit nicely.

The rest of the usual suspects from the family turned up to cover all the bases required of any Windsor family event: someone simply must be in navy (a task handled by Autumn Phillips and her mother-in-law's accessories, with assists from most of the Dudes in Suits)...

...someone has to go for beige (Zara Tindall's got it taken care of), and one can never leave out the lighter shades of blue (The Duchess of Cambridge's repeated Alexander McQueen checks that off, paired with her brooch and wedding earrings - all featuring acorns like her coat of arms).

Personally, I loved the floral touch added by Princess Beatrice (perhaps my favorite in Claire Mischevani) and the Wessex ladies, The Countess and Lady Louise. Sometimes those florals really do add the groundbreaking dash of Spring you need.

Balmoral Holiday, 2017

By Stuart Yeates from Oxford, UK - Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0

The Queen started her annual summer Balmoral holiday in July at Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate, while the castle was still open to the public, followed by taking up official residence at the castle itself in August. Her break usually ends around late September/early October with an engagement or two in Scotland before heading south.

Any appearances by The Queen during her holiday will be gathered in this post.

***********

October 8: One last church outing at Balmoral before heading back to London. The Queen rode to church with Lady Sarah Chatto and wore her Aquamarine Clip Brooches. Photos at the Daily Mail if you're so inclined.

September 29: Inching back into the public sphere with an engagement in Aberdeen, covered here.

September 24: The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch makes a repeat church appearance, and HM recruits Prince William as her car companion.

September 21: Our tour of Balmoral interiors continues (and of Her Maj's signature Scotland casual look, with the same stuff as the previous day), thanks to an audience with Peter Cosgrove, the Governor-General of Australia. Spot the classic iPod on the dock behind them!

September 20: The Queen received Canada's Governor General Designate Julie Payette, for an audience at Balmoral. This is classic casual QEII: a strand of pearls, Pearl Stud Earrings, Black Strap Watch, Engagement and Wedding Rings. And a Balmoral tartan skirt, of course, because that's the only way to roll.

September 10: The Saskatchewan Tourmaline Flower Brooch makes an appearance - its first since 2015! - at church.

September 9: The Queen was spotted out riding at Balmoral, pictures at the Express.

September 4: Interrupting the Balmoral holiday for a quick engagement opening the Queensferry Crossing and for a peek at a rare brooch: Queen Mary's Thistle Brooch.

September 3: Church again, and this time we can see that the brooch on duty is the Flower Basket Brooch.

September 2: Annual appearance at the Braemar Gathering, covered separately here.

August 31: Members of the family were seen driving out of Balmoral on the anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales' death; here's The Queen. I'll spare you links to articles trying to make a big deal out of the fact that they were at Balmoral just like they were in 1997.

August 27: Another church visit can be seen in this gallery at Rex, but can't identify the brooch.

August 20: Finally, a church-goin' brooch we can identify! The Singapore Peranakan Diamond Jubilee Brooch is on its sixth appearance for 2017. It seems most of the Royal Family is hanging around Balmoral right now, as the church-goin' crowd included The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of York, The Earl and (I think) Countess of Wessex, and Zara and Mike Tindall. Pictures at the link below and also at the DM.

August 13: The Queen and other members of the Royal Family attended church at Balmoral, in another unidentifiable brooch. Photos at the Daily Mail.

August 7: The traditional welcome ceremony kicks off the start of The Queen's official residence at Balmoral Castle. Her inspection of the Royal Guard included both the Royal Regiment of Scotland Badge - which is getting a lot of mileage this year - and Cruachan IV, the mischievous regimental mascot that tried to take a bite out of Her Maj's flowers at their last meeting.

August 5: The Queen made a surprise appearance at the Aboyne Highland Games to mark its 150th anniversary. She wore her Diamond Art Deco Double Clip Brooch. [STV]

July 30: Church at Balmoral, wearing what appears to be an emerald brooch - maybe the Round Cambridge Emerald without its pendant, but it's impossible to say for certain. [Daily Mail]

July 23: Church at Balmoral in the Greville Scroll Brooch.

Newbury Races

The Queen attended Newbury Races at Newbury Racecourse.

All smiles today, because that birthday luck kicked in belatedly: The Queen's horse Call to Mind was a winner on her second day at Newbury!

Investiture at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held an Investiture at Buckingham Palace.

We do have a brooch here, elusive though its identification is proving to be so far. Update: Mystery solved! Thanks to eagle-eyed commenters who saw footage on the news (Scarf Addict kindly shared an image in the comments), we know that this is the Flower Basket Brooch.

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace.

We're mid-November, and this is only appearance #3 for the year for the Aquamarine Clips! These brooches have been near the top of our annual list of favorite brooches each year this blog has been around. Will they miss the cut in 2016?

And the Flower Basket is also having a bit of a sparse year: this is appearance #4.

State Visit from Colombia, Farewell, and a Visit to Newmarket

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh bid farewell to the President of Colombia and Mrs. Santos as they left Buckingham Palace during their State Visit to the United Kingdom.

There's no brooch! But don't worry, we'll get to it.

The Queen later visited Newmarket, where she unveiled her 90th birthday gift from the town, a statue of herself with two horses. She also opened the new National Heritage Center for Horseracing and Sporting Art.
For more: Zimbio gallery.

She just left it on her jacket, see. I love the idea of her wearing a gift from her parents when enjoying a day celebrating her support of racing, which is an inherited interest. Not that she needs a reason to wear this favorite gem, of course.

This trip reunited Her Maj with two of her former racehorses, and they seemed excited to see her and/or her carrots:

Visit to Wales

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, and The Duchess of Cornwall, addressed the opening of the Fifth Session of The National Assembly, Cardiff, Wales. The Queen also opened the new Brain Research Imaging Centre at Cardiff University.
For more: Zimbio gallery.

I suppose we could say that this is a brooch with a Welsh connection of the sneaky variety, having been a gift for the birth of the current Prince of Wales and all.

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

The Duchess of Cornwall, on the other hand, opted for a more obvious connection, wearing one of her brooches featuring the Prince of Wales feathers.

This is about as much jewelry as this particular outfit can take, but I still wish we'd seen something different. That's just me getting my hopes up - she wore my favorite Pink Topaz Choker for the opening of the Fourth Session, so anything less was bound to be a bit of a let down.

The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations at Windsor

The Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended the final night of her birthday celebrations at Windsor.

HM is wearing her Turquoise and Diamond Brooch tonight! It looks lovely with her Angela Kelly outfit in sea green with a lace overlay. She stuck to her usual day pearls and earrings, which is somewhat surprising given that this was a black tie event.

Many members of the Royal Family are present tonight, including The Duchess of Cambridge, who is wearing diamond chandelier earrings loaned to her by The Queen and seen several times before. Princes William and Harry are wearing the red-trimmed dinner jackets that are known as the Windsor uniform, worn only at Windsor Castle. (Read more about its history here.)

It looks like The Duchess of Cornwall is again wearing her Five Strand Pearl Choker with Pink Topaz Clasp, and I'm feeling ever so lucky to have two appearances in one week.
It isn't only the British royal family in attendance tonight. Royal Windsor Horse Show regular The King of Bahrain is seated next to The Queen, and The Landgrave of Hesse is seated next to Kate, and his wife seated between William and Harry. Seated right behind The Duke of Edinburgh was his nephew, Prince Ludwig of Baden.

The show closed with some VIP riders on a few of The Queen's horses: The Earl of Wessex, Lady Louise, The Princess Royal, and Zara Tindall! A lovely birthday surprise, and a wonderful end to an entertaining evening.

The Queen also met the performers at an earlier reception, which was shown on the broadcast. She wore the Flower Basket Brooch:

Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen received the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, for a private audience at Buckingham Palace.
A brooch with special family history for a prime minister with special family history, I like it. (Plus, plenty of bonus shots including the photos sitting around the room, and I know some of you love to check those out.)

State Visit from China, Welcome Ceremony

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family welcomed the President of The People’s Republic of China, Mr. Xi Jinping, and Madame Peng Liyuan at the start of his State Visit to the United Kingdom.
Obviously, I find this lilac gray Stewart Parvin tweed coat and Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat would have been enhanced by a touch of amethysts, but that's how I always feel, so never mind me. Instead, we get the Modern Ruby Brooch to kick off this much-anticipated (and controversial) state visit.

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall met the Chinese first couple at their hotel and escorted them to the welcome ceremony today.

It was nice to see The Duchess in a suite of jewels we've covered here before, including regular favorites in the form of her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings, her Gold Chain Bracelet with Multi-Color Stones, and her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Small Diamond Clasp. She also wore her pair of Cosmos Brooches from Van Cleef & Arpels.

UPDATES:
Back at Buckingham Palace, the traditional exchange of gifts occurred. The Queen gave the Chinese president a collection of Shakespeare's sonnets in a specially commissioned leather and gilt box and a pair of Royal Crown Derby candlesticks for Madame Peng, in addition to the standard gift of a silver-framed set of portraits of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. From President Xi, The Queen received two of Madame Peng's albums (she's a famous folk singer in China) along with a 1.18 meter long work of embroidery, a stamp booklet, and a wood carving.

The President and Madame Peng joined The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall for tea at Clarence House, where Camilla changed into her pearl choker with an Art Deco sapphire clasp, the newest addition to her choker collection.

The Duke of Cambridge also met with the President today, at Buckingham Palace.

And The Queen inspected the scene for the state banquet, as she always does! Updated to add: In this Flickr behind-the-scenes gallery, we can identify The Queen's brooch as the Flower Basket Brooch.

Stay tuned for another post later for tonight's state banquet.

Church at Sandringham

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended church at Sandringham, Norfolk.
The Cambridge family is supposed to be heading to Anmer Hall, their Norfolk home, next, so perhaps Her Maj and the DoE will stick around to see their new great-granddaughter over there. In the article linked above you can see that she's sporting one of her most sentimental family brooches, the Flower Basket, also worn to Prince George's christening. I did not realize until this entry that this is our first recorded appearance in 2015 for the Basket - unusual for one that usually ends up on the favorites list at the end of the year.

Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen received the new First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, for an audience at Buckingham Palace.

It takes a lot of pattern power to make the Flower Basket Brooch disappear, and yet here we are. Not one of my favorite dress-to-brooch pairings, I gotta say.

FEI Lifetime Achievement Award Presentation (and a New Brooch Alert!)

At Buckingham Palace, The Queen was presented with the FEI Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (Fédération Équestre Internationale). The award was presented by FEI President Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein. The Duke of Edinburgh was also present.
For more: Express and Star article, FEI press release.
From the FEI: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II today became the first recipient of the FEI Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of her leading role as supporter of equestrian sport throughout her reign as British monarch." She looks delighted, as well she should.
And the FEI knows her well - the gift was a new brooch! Again from the FEI: "The award is a stunning white gold and diamond brooch of nine interlinked horseshoes, created especially for today’s presentation, and mirroring the insignia of the FEI Awards." Looking forward to seeing it in action. (Update: Here's a post on the brooch itself, including close up view.) Until then, the brooch for today's presentation was the trusty old Flower Basket.

Visit from King Philippe and Queen Mathilde

The Queen received the King and Queen of the Belgians at Buckingham Palace and hosted a private lunch attended by other members of the Royal Family. The visit is part of a series of official introductory visits made by the new Belgian sovereign couple to other countries.
Video, above; click here for a gallery (including more stops on the Belgian visit) from Le Soir
You know it's a comfortable visit when the dogs are on the loose! And both queens stayed well within their comfort zones: the Flower Basket Brooch for Elizabeth and another Natan ensemble (with her favorite collar style) for Mathilde. Mathilde's looking great, but this also strikes me as nothing really notable from her - feels like an outfit we've seen a hundred times.

Investiture at Windsor Castle

The Queen held an Investiture at Windsor Castle.
Where there are celebs, there are brooch pictures - at least when it comes to normally ignored investitures, that's the case. Today's glimpse of the favorite Flower Basket comes courtesy of Penelope Keith, who is now Dame Penelope, and Michael Crawford, who now has his CBE.

Audience at Buckingham Palace

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh received the Governor General designate of Australia and his wife at Buckingham Palace.
Not surprising based on her recent audiences with Commonwealth figures, but still I'm a little disappointed we didn't get one of the brooches with a direct Australia connection! Instead, we have the return of a standard favorite, the Flower Basket Brooch. (Click here for a bigger picture.)

Christmas Broadcast, 2013

The Queen's annual message was broadcast on Christmas Day.
Video: The Queen's Christmas Broadcast
This is an instance in which the jewel makes all the connections: the Flower Basket Brooch was worn to Prince George's christening, which was featured in the message and in the photos sitting beside the Queen as she speaks, and she's also sitting beside photos of her parents, who gave her the brooch. Naturally she wore it again - and also the dress she wore to William and Kate's wedding, an interesting choice since the couple featured prominently in this year's video.
