The Dorset Bow Brooch made a repeat appearance for today's somber ceremony, once again anchoring The Queen's cluster of poppies.

She was flanked on the balcony by The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge, both wearing brooches of significance. The Duchess of Cornwall wore the badge of the 9/12th Lancers, a piece that belonged to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and is selected by Camilla because her late father was a member of the 12th Lancers. The Duchess of Cambridge's brooch is the Codebreakers poppy brooch from the Royal British Legion, honoring those that worked in signal intelligence; her grandmother and great-aunt worked at the Bletchley Park code-breaking facility during World War II. She also wore the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings on loan from The Queen.

On another balcony, The Countess of Wessex wore her Rifles Badge (she is the Royal Colonel of the 5th Battalion) with a poppy brooch, while simple poppies graced both The Duchess of Sussex and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

And down on the ground, The Prince of Wales led the rest of the family in laying their wreaths at the base of the Cenotaph.

A trio of jewel picks from The Queen that are regulars this time of year: Queen Alexandra's Wedding Earrings and a longer triple strand of pearls, both regularly seen at this event, and the Dorset Bow Brooch, a favorite for holding her cluster of poppies.

I'm short on time tonight so I won't do a full run through of all the family members, except to say that I noted The Duchess of Cambridge wearing the Silver Jubilee Diamond and Pearl Earrings that she has loaned from The Queen in the past.

Anglo-Norse Society Centenary

The Queen and The King of Norway, Joint Patrons, attended a centenary reception for the Anglo-Norse Society in London.

A handy little joint engagement while the extended fam's in town for Charles' birthday party, how about that?

It's a brooch treat, too. We haven't seen the Dorset Bow Brooch used outside of the Cenotaph remembrance service and one state banquet since this site's been in existence. (I like to think she had it out as a contender for Remembrance Sunday and then decided to give it a consolation appearance when it didn't make the final cut.) The size works really well here, balancing the bow at the waist nicely.

A bonus bunad alert in Britain! I like this whole engagement very much.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.

An emotional day on an already emotional day today, as The Queen watched the Cenotaph ceremony from the balcony for the first time. With The Duke of Edinburgh by her side, they watched The Prince of Wales lead the ceremony on the ground and lay a wreath on Her Majesty's behalf.

The Duchess of Cornwall joined The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh on their balcony. The Duchess anchors her cluster of poppies with a different brooch each year, often badges or other pieces of significance to the occasion, and that's what she did this year: the badge of the 9/12th Lancers belonged to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and is of special importance to Camilla because her late father was a member of the 12th Lancers.

As mentioned yesterday, we'll take a look at some of the other family members present on the other blog, still to come.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.
As is her tradition, The Queen chose a bow brooch to "tie" her poppies. Today's is the Dorset Bow, one of the earliest bow brooches to be added to her collection, having been a wedding gift.

We assume, of course, the standard pearl necklace was also there, though not immediately visible.

Members of the royal family in uniform joined HM in laying wreaths, including The Duke of Edinburgh (not pictured), The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, The Earl of Wessex, and The Duke of Kent.

Other members watched from the balcony above, including The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duchess of Cambridge, and The Countess of Wessex. Kate is wearing a brooch given to her in Australia earlier this year; Sophie is wearing a regimental badge. Camilla is also wearing a badge, from her father's regiment, and her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Small Diamond Clasp.

State Visit from Singapore, State Banquet

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, with other members of the Royal Family present, gave a State Banquet in honor of the President of the Republic of Singapore at Buckingham Palace.
For more: Zimbio gallery.
There's red in her sash and that means of course my first thought is that we have another missed opportunity for the Oriental Circlet to appear. But never mind, Her Maj likes her favorites and the ubiquitous Girls tiara is reigning for the night. She paired this with another selection from her collection of bow brooches and the massive diamonds from the Coronation Necklace and Earrings. I have not yet seen a good enough photo to identify her bracelet, but hopefully will be able to update later. Her watch is one she's worn many times, but it doesn't have its own post here yet.

Sitting at the banquet table, the guest of honor has The Queen on one side and another female royal on the other (at least when the guest of honor is a male). It's usually Camilla, and when she's gone, the honor travels down the line. The Princess Royal was also absent this evening, and we ended up with a special treat: Sophie!
She sported her newest tiara, the Five Aquamarine Tiara from HM's collection, and I don't blame her for wearing it so often - it's my favorite of the ones she wears too.
Also present were Princess Michael of Kent, in her Kent Festoon Tiara, and Princess Alexandra of Kent, wearing the pearl version of her Ogilvy Tiara. Click here for that. In the Zimbio gallery linked above, it appears the Duchess of Gloucester is wearing the Cartier Indian Tiara.

Update: A couple videos are out of the banquet. The British Monarchy's video of The Queen's Speech is below; ChannelNewsAsia also offers some additional views. Screencaps have been added above.

Update Again: For those sore that the lovely Duchess of Gloucester did not get a proper close up at the state banquet, enjoy this look at HRH shining in the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara at tonight's (10/22) Guildhall banquet for the President and Mrs. Tan.

Remembrance Sunday

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, London. The service honors those that have died in armed conflicts.
It was once again the Dorset Bow Brooch glinting away in the sun at the solemn Remembrance service. Though the Queen was well bundled up, we can assume there's a pearl necklace, etc., in there somewhere. Her traditional cluster of poppies was also present once again, after taking a leave of absence from the previous evening's event.

A few more scenes from around the Cenotaph:
The Queen was backed on the ground by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, and the Duke of Kent. Prince Harry laid a wreath on behalf of the Prince of Wales, who marked the day in India where he is on tour with the Duchess of Cornwall. The Duke of York visited Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, and participated in a service there.
Watching from the balconies above were the Duchess of Cambridge, the Countess of Wessex, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and Princess Alexandra of Kent. The Countess of Wessex wore the badge of the 5th Battalion The Rifles, as she is their Royal Colonel, and the Duchess of Cambridge wore a crystal poppy brooch from Buckley London.

The Dorset Bow Brooch

The Dorset Bow Brooch
The Dorset Bow Brooch was a present to Queen Mary for her wedding to the future George V in 1893 from the County of Dorset (unsurprisingly). It’s composed of diamonds set in gold and silver and was made by Carrington & Co.

When it came time to select wedding presents for her granddaughter Princess Elizabeth in 1947, Mary picked several of her own wedding gifts to pass on, this brooch included.

The Queen has quite a collection of bow brooches. Queen Victoria’s Bow Brooches are the basic design used most often for everyday wear, while others like the Dorset Bow are in a fancier category. This is somewhere in the middle of the fancy scale, I'd say.
In addition to appearances at everyday engagements, it's been worn for notable occasions like the christening of Prince Charles and the funeral of the Duke of Windsor. It is also a popular choice to secure the Queen's poppies at occasions like the annual Remembrance Day ceremony, and is even deemed fancy enough to secure ribands of orders of chivalry for the occasional state event.
It’s not my favorite of the bow brooches, to be honest – all that detail on the “ribbon” seems a little squished to me – but I can never argue with something used as a casual diamond tie for poppies.

The Dorset Bow was my guess for today's brooch, and look at that - I was spot on. A popular choice for one's poppy holding needs.
