Garter Day

The Queen gave a Luncheon Party for the Companions for the Most Noble Order of the Garter. A Service was held in St. George's Chapel this afternoon.

Hey hey it's Garter Day, featuring Bonus Royal Action! Before we get to that, though, it's Her Maj herself. She was decked out in diamonds this year, including Queen Mary's Cluster Earrings. Those have been more commonly spotted at the Order of the Thistle Service in recent years.

Here's your Bonus Royal Action: The King of Spain and The King of the Netherlands showed up to be formally invested as Supernumerary or "Stranger" Knights of the Garter. Both received the honor during their recent state visits to the United Kingdom.

Royal Family

Queen Letizia and Queen Máxima didn't miss a chance to show up in their behatted best, making for an extra splendiforous royal spouse line up this year.

Queen Máxima just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that she's still into the ginormous belts, while The Duchess of Cambridge (in the Collingwood Pearl and Diamond Earrings from Diana) is here to reassure you that her supply of proper Catherine Walker princess gear is never-ending. Thanks for the updates, ladies.

Rare is the day when Queen Máxima gets out-jeweled, but she must have felt the sting of a missed opportunity when Letizia and Camilla rolled up. Queen Letizia came to play, bless her, with no less than the earrings from the joyas de pasar earrings and a diamond brooch (!!) (this one's from Queen Sofia). The Duchess of Cornwall matched her gem for gem in her magnificent Pink Topaz Choker and its accompanying earrings, huzzah. Deeeelightful.

The Duchess of Cornwall's Pink Topaz Choker and Earrings

With a big pink stone right at its heart and a gorgeous pair of earrings to match, The Duchess of Cornwall's Five Strand Pearl Choker with Pink Topaz Clasp is my personal favorite member of her extensive pearl necklace collection. The clasp features an oval pink topaz stone surrounded by a ring of diamonds in a delicate scrolling design and a ring of collet-set diamonds on the outside. She also has matching earrings, each with an oval pink topaz in a foliate diamond design. The diamonds used in the pieces are rose and cushion-cut.

We know some of the details of the history of this set, and other details have been assumed. It has been widely reported that the jewels were a gift from The Prince of Wales (some have even said they were his wedding gift to her); while I agree with that assumption, I do not believe that it has been officially confirmed. What we know is that the pink topaz and diamond center, which had a detachable brooch setting, and the earrings were sold at a Sotheby's auction in June 2000 for £22,925.

According to the auction notes, the pieces date from the 1830s and are thought to have once been part of a larger jewel such as a tiara or necklace. Many have assumed they were purchased directly from Sotheby's by The Prince of Wales, but they were not worn publicly by The Duchess until several years later.
Wearing both choker and earrings

They have certainly been in The Duchess of Cornwall's collection since at least 2006. The earrings were worn to a dinner in Pakistan that year. The necklace was first worn in a longer version with the clasp at the side before being shortened to the choker style we know today. The current format was first seen on The Duchess at the May 2008 wedding of Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly.
Wearing the necklace with her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings
The set has been worn for both evening and day engagements; day engagements are more likely to be high-profile royal events (weddings, Trooping the Colour, Royal Ascot, etc.) instead of regular day-to-day appearances. As she often does with her demi-parures, Camilla regularly wears the earrings and choker separately. With such a wonderful color in the pink stones and such a regal setting, any appearance of the set is guaranteed to get a rave review from me.

Malta Visit: Day 2, CHOGM Dinner

The Queen attended the official gala dinner for the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Attard, Malta. She was joined by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, and The Duchess of Cornwall.
Day two and the jumpy claps just keep coming! On top of her interesting brooches during the day, The Queen continued to bring the jewel delight with another appearance in her glorious Cambridge Emerald and Delhi Durbar Parure!

Queen Mary's impressive green stones had slept in the vault for several years before The Queen brought them back at last year's Irish state banquet. I thought we'd have a long wait to see them again, but I am delighted to be proven wrong. They look spectacular against her standard evening white ensemble.

The jumpy claps came from all directions, I might add. From her toast at the dinner, maybe my new favorite HM quote: "Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister of Canada, for making me feel so old!" (Here's the text of his toast, to which she was responding.)

The Duchess of Cornwall was also looking fab and she too brought out some favorite pieces. As expected, she stuck with her standard diadem, the Greville Tiara, plus one of my very favorite sets from her collection: her pearl choker with pink topaz and diamond clasp and the matching pink topaz and diamond earrings. These are gorgeous and they make a lovely and unexpected pair for her gray gown. She also wore The Queen's Royal Family Order.
