State Visit from Spain, Welcome Ceremony

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh welcomed King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain at the beginning of their State Visit to the United Kingdom.
House of HM the King

The Queen has hosted state visits from King Felipe VI's parents and from his maternal grandparents during her reign. A triple generation State Visit tradition! Just one of the fun facts you get when one of the world's longest-reigning monarchs meets up with one of the world's newest monarchs.

The classic Shell Brooch was on duty today, shining brightly from her magenta coat. Her Majesty matched both His Majesty (nice tie work, Felipe!) and the other Her Majesty, Queen Letizia's yellow ensemble coordinating nicely with the yellow accents on this Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat.

The queenly pair really stepped up the coordination game once inside Buckingham Palace for lunch and a gaze around the Royal Collection's special State Visit exhibition, because the yellow flowers on QEII's dress really stand out. As usual, the brooch was transferred off the coat to the dress beneath.

The Duchess of Cornwall was an array of her usual favorite jewels and her usual favorite ivory shade and her usual favorite statement hats ("statement" being an understatement in this case) for her part in the welcome ceremony. Her Diamond Stick Insect Brooch is said to have been a gift from her late father, and it is one of her favorites; we have not yet covered it here.

The Duchess of Cornwall at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party for Barnardo's

I am here for any and all appearances of my favorite pearl choker from The Duchess of Cornwall's collection, so let's talk about today's garden party.

The Duchess of Cornwall, President, hosted a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace to mark the 150th year of the Barnardo's charity, supporting vulnerable children and young people.
The Queen gave special permission in her birthday year for a few additional garden parties to be held, and this is one of them. By the way, in the photo above she's walking with designer Bruce Oldfield, who is the Vice President of Barnardo's. He's also the designer of this repeated pink suit, which is great because it brings out appearances of a) this necklace that I love, and b) one of her more fabulous Philip Treacy hats.

The Queen wasn't present for the garden party, but she was well supported by Princess Alexandra of Kent (wearing a pearl choker of her own) and The Duchess of Gloucester (skillfully using some ruby clips to tie the color of her hat into the rest of her outfit).

(Oh, and The Queen herself? She was in casual mode at the Windsor Horse Show today. The show usually brings a few such sightings, so we'll round 'em up later on. Sunday will be the big birthday show, for which she and The Duke of Edinburgh will be accompanied by The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry.)

Birthday Beacon Lighting, and Yet Another Television Feature

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, and The Duchess of Cornwall, lit the first in a series of beacons for Her Majesty's 90th Birthday at Windsor Castle.
I thought we might have a second outfit and a different brooch here, but it won't hurt us to look at the Jardine Star again. Camilla also stuck to her usual selections, not much of note.

Perhaps they were saving it up for the private dinner hosted by Charles at Windsor Castle this evening. A reported 71 guests, including senior members of the Royal Family and some European royals, celebrated the milestone with The Queen. It was a black tie affair with dinner in the Waterloo Chamber and a special concert.

*******************************

Also, the BBC tonight added their own tribute to the mountain of features for HM's birthday. Elizabeth at 90 - A Family Tribute aired tonight; we previewed it last week here. (If you're keeping track, we've had Our Queen at 90, then The Queen at 90, and now Elizabeth at 90, so clearly there can be no more as all the possible title options in the whole world have already been taken.)
BBC screencap
Jokes aside, this was my favorite feature so far in terms of new footage and what felt like some real family moments. Narration by The Prince of Wales and comments from family members while they watch some previously unseen family films gave this a more personal feel. Lady Sarah Chatto was a lovely surprise; even a fellow queen regnant, Queen Margrethe, pops up to add her thoughts. The Queen watches some of the footage too.

Jewel-wise, the behind-the-scenes Coronation footage is a jewel spotting dream, and the Greville Chandelier Earrings and Ruby and Diamond Floral Bandeau Necklace are literal shining stars. Do watch it if you can.

Elizabeth at 90 - A Family Tribute is available on BBC iPlayer here, but it is geoblocked for audiences outside of the UK.

Update: It is also on YouTube, for now. You can watch below (thanks Miss Aotearoa!).

VJ Day 70th Anniversary Service

The Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, attended a Service of Remembrance at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day, which marks the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.

A rare trip back down to London during the Balmoral break for Her Majesty today, to attend another important World War II anniversary (despite alleged terror threats, I might add). She accessorized her repeated nubbly pink suit with the Cullinan V Brooch, which - coincidentally or not - we last saw at the commemorations of the VE Day 70th anniversary.

Also present at the service were The Earl and Countess of Wessex and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
The Duchess and Countess both chose to repeat outfits today. Sophie's Emilia Wickstead is from Ascot and Birgitte's coat and hat are from about a million other occasions. Sophie did mix up her hat pairing, and though I think I prefer her original Ascot hat, I'm always a sucker for a French twist.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, meanwhile, were present for the commemorations at Horse Guards Parade and a reception for veterans at Westminster Abbey Garden.
Camilla stuck with her usual jewel selections, including her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Small Diamond Clasp with her chain necklace and C charm underneath, and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings. And since someone usually asks, I'll go ahead and tell you that in this picture, Charles has not been given a spirit stick by the local cheer squad - he's carrying his Field Marshal's Baton, which is part of his uniform.

Camilla is also repeating an outfit from Ascot, which she wore at that time with a matching coat on top. It was a little busy then, but the dress is nice on its own. Wearing it while dancing with a dashing veteran doesn't hurt, either. (If you need one more smile for the day, read the caption on this photo from Clarence House's Instagram.)

The Duchess of Cornwall at the Waterloo Banquet

Another tiara event that I wasn't expecting for The Duchess of Cornwall (her husband tagged along, too) and I am in seventh heaven! Another special Camilla event post is called for:

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall attended The Duke of Wellington's Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House, London, as part of the events marking the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo.
Get a load of the diamond power on display here! This is only the second time that Camilla has worn the Greville Festoon Necklace (which is actually two necklaces, a two strand and a three strand) and it remains as spectacular as ever. A favorite of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, this necklace is my very favorite selection to see paired with the Greville Tiara. The fact that she can pull this much off is basically every reason I decided to cover Camilla on this blog in a nutshell, in case you were wondering.

Diamond Bracelet (said to have belonged to The Queen Mother)
Engagement and Wedding Rings

Charles is in his mess dress uniform, so he also has worn his orders and medals (including the Order of the Garter sash). His wife is sans orders for the evening, which fits in with the rest of the dress code.

Let's have one last moment of appreciation for The Duchess of Wellington, shall we? In addition to her wonderful necklace and earrings, she's wearing a hefty circlet tiara that is an heirloom of the Wellington family. Antonia, who was born a Princess of Prussia, also wore the diadem on her wedding day.

Royal Windsor Horse Show 2015

The Queen makes several informal visits to the Royal Windsor Horse Show on the private grounds at Windsor Castle during the show's duration (13-17 May this year). Appearances at this year's show will be compiled in this entry, which will be updated as the week goes on.

May 13

Opening day brought both The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall out to play. Pearl stud earrings, a double strand of pearls, engagement and wedding rings, and a leather strap watch with a round face for HM; Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings, Gold Chain Bracelet with Multi-Color Stones, Cross and Eye Chain Bracelet, a watch, and engagement and wedding rings on show for HRH.

May 15

Not much to show for jewels today, but a jolly day with extra appearances by The Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise, plus The Duke of York and The King of Bahrain.

May 16

Another standard appearance in the day. The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch came out later for award presentations, and a longer double strand of pearls for the evening event.

May 17
And finally, she presented more prizes wearing Queen Victoria's 11 Pearl Brooch

The Duchess of Cornwall's Engagement and Wedding Rings

The Duchess of Cornwall's Engagement and Wedding Rings
The engagement of The Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles was announced on February 10, 2005, after reportedly settling the details with The Queen over the Christmas holiday, and slightly earlier than planned since details had been leaked to the media. The happy couple appeared at a charity gala at Windsor Castle that night and met the press beforehand, the bride-to-be stating that she was "just coming down to earth" and reporting that Charles had gotten down on one knee to pop the question. ("Of course," she said. "What else?")
Video: The night the engagement was announced
Camilla proudly showed off her large engagement ring, a design (according to multiple reports at the time) of a central square-cut diamond flanked on either side by three diamond baguettes and set in platinum. It was confirmed to be a royal heirloom, and was later shown to have been in the collection of the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Charles' grandmother.
Queen Elizabeth wears the ring
Exactly how the ring came to be in Queen Elizabeth's collection is a matter of speculation. Various reports have dated the piece from the 1920s or 1930s; some have said it was a gift from her husband to celebrate the birth of their first child (Princess Elizabeth, the current queen), while others have placed it as part of the Greville bequest (the jewels inherited by Queen Elizabeth from Mrs. Ronald Greville in 1942). Like the rest of The Queen Mother's jewels, it most likely was inherited by The Queen in 2002 and then given to Charles after that. The ring is now worn daily by Camilla alongside her gold wedding band. The rings exchanged by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are made from Welsh gold, as is the royal family's tradition, and were created by Wartski jewelers (appropriately, a firm with roots in Wales).
This is one of the larger engagement rings in the main royal family, and it is often cited as one of the (if not the) most valuable ones, using purely speculative figures, of course. But despite the large stones, it doesn't feel overpowering; the simple Art Deco design makes for the perfect showcase for these diamonds (and makes it one of my personal favorite royal engagement rings).

Appearances: Since these are worn every day, individual appearances will not be catalogued here.
