Reception for The Prince of Wales

The Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, hosted a Buckingham Palace reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the Investiture of The Prince of Wales.
Clarence House

It's festive purple print for Her Maj today, with one of her Amethyst Bouquet Brooches to accessorize. (This, if you're keeping track, is the "new" one.)

There's no better occasion for a Prince of Wales feathers brooch, is there? The Duchess of Cornwall has a few to select from; this one is probably the best known, the emerald and diamond model from Queen Alexandra. She added her Four Strand Pearl Choker with Large Diamond Clasp and her Everyday Pearl Pendant Earrings.

Other guests! The Duchess of Cambridge's new dress (very much like a Beulah dress she already owns) is apparently from her private dressmaker. The Duchess of Sussex repeated her Amanda Wakeley white coat over a metallic dress. And The Princess Royal is probably repeating too, because she's Anne.

State Visit from The Netherlands, Welcome Ceremony

The Queen, with The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, welcomed King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands at the beginning of their State Visit to the United Kingdom.

Let the state visit show begin! The Queen started us off with a repeated outfit and brooch selection in my favorite shade.

The Duchess of Cornwall also selected a repeated outfit - one of the smartest in her rotation right now, and one I'm always happy to see. She paired it with her tried and true pearl favorites.

Queen Máxima reliably brought a new outfit for the trip, a soft pink in interesting fabric by Claes Iversen. Looks sparkly. And she definitely sparkled with her suite of pink jewels. These gems are usually reported as kunzite and diamonds; the brooch, which can be worn as independent pieces, is almost an homage to the mega Cullinan III and IV Brooch. The Cullinan, of course, was cut in Amsterdam, and The Queen wore her "chips" for a visit to the jeweler in 1958.

Updates:

Royal Family

The Queen's brooch was transferred to her dress when the party moved inside for lunch and a look through the Royal Collection's special exhibit of Dutch-related items. Gifts will also have been exchanged; The Queen appointed The King a supernumerary Knight of the Garter, so we'll see him wear that at the state banquet.

Other members of the Royal Family present included The Countess of Wessex and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Clarence House

Later in the day, The King and Queen joined The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall for tea at Clarence House. Camilla wore her Cosmos Clip Brooches.

Coming up tonight: The state banquet! According to reports, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be present and Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau has been invited.

Well, this is weird. The Amethyst Bouquet Brooch went away for a while - no appearances between March 2014 and October 2015 - and when it returned, I noted that the design had been changed. Original and new versions of the same brooch...or so I thought. Some of you insisted that it wasn't a redesign, there were two different brooches. That never made much sense to me. But, well, here we are:

Embed from Getty Images

This is the "original" brooch. It has a round and a pear-shape amethyst at the top instead of the two pear-shapes of the "new" version, along with other differences. And it's back again in 2018. So...two, apparently? Must be two, since the "revised" version was last seen in December 2017, not long ago. That obviously raises a lot of other questions (how long have there been two? Always, or just recently? And if recently...why?), none of which we have the answers to at this point. She's certainly keeping us on our toes, that's all I know.

Amethyst Bouquet Brooch

For those with particular opinions about how I catalog and document things on this blog: At least at this time, I'm not going to designate two different Amethyst Bouquet Brooches with different names and different entries, because two brooches so similar are bound to create situations where we can't tell which is which. So, like pearl necklaces and Queen Victoria's Bow Brooches, I'm keeping everything lumped together in the same entry with the same name. At least at this time; this brooch entry has already been updated more times than I care to remember, so as with everything else around here, nothing's permanent.

And another P.S.: The Queen was spotted driving herself to church in Windsor on February 25th, not covered independently here because a brooch wasn't visible.

HMS Queen Elizabeth Commissioning, Scripture Union Anniversary, and Audiences

The Queen attended the Commissioning Ceremony of aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth in Portsmouth. Her Majesty was accompanied by The Princess Royal, Commodore-in-Chief of HMNB Portsmouth.

Purple, Anne in uniform, and Her Maj’s usual delight around these sorts of events. That’s a top notch engagement for you.

Amethysts make it even better! They’re the cherry on top of this outfit. The grape on top of this outfit, perhaps we should say.

Not so entirely certain about the red and gold of the Grima Ruby Brooch against this hot pink, on the other hand.

And here we have the Cambridge Pearl, doing an admirable job of sticking out despite the heavy floral on this dress. Plus, a triplet moment! She coincidentally coordinates very well with the Nigerian High Commissioner George Adesola Oguntade and Mrs. Oguntade.

Lord Snowdon Memorial Service

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh and Members of the Royal Family, attended a Service of Thanksgiving remembering Lord Snowdon at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey.

It's been over a year since we last saw the Amethyst Bouquet Brooch. It looks perfect with this velvet-trimmed purple ensemble; I may even like it better here than the Kent Amethyst, which was worn when this outfit debuted last year. Good choices all around for this event, purple having been considered a color of half-mourning in eras past.

Three Strand Pearl Necklace

Also of sparkly note: Lady Sarah Chatto wore her pearl and diamond wedding earrings, which belonged to her mother. I wouldn't have pegged her to be the one that would get the most use of Princess Margaret's jewels, but she reliably wears some at every royal event she attends, and it's wonderful to see.

Elizabeth Line Unveiling

The Queen visited the construction of the Crossrail metro service and unveiled its new name at Bond Street station, London. Crossrail will be named the Elizabeth line in Her Majesty's honor when the service opens in 2018.
She dressed to match her new train line! This delights me to no end. (And not just because it happens to be my favorite color. She should dress to match everything that bears her name from here on out. It would be glorious.) You will note that the purple is also the perfect contrast to the neon orange uniforms of the workers in attendance, because Her Maj's team misses nothing.
After an unfortunate run of audiences with mystery brooches, we're back in action on the jewel front too. The Amethyst Bouquet Brooch is a favorite to pair with this repeated Angela Kelly lilac outfit.

My first thought is The Queen Mother's Palm Leaf Brooch. What do you think? UPDATE: And yes, it is indeed the Palm Leaf (with thanks to @TheRoyalExpert).

I missed one yesterday, so thanks to those that let me know:

Rugby World Cup Reception and Investiture at Buckingham Palace

Friday, October 9: The Queen held an Investiture at Buckingham Palace.
Our first glimpse of The Queen back at work in London came on Friday, but since it was an investiture, no brooch looks were forthcoming. {Sad face.}

Today: The Queen, joined by other members of the Royal Family, hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for the Rugby World Cup 2015.
So I choose to consider this her official return to business instead, and there's no better way to make a comeback than in the richest of purples with amethysts to boot (says me). Scrumptious.

Irish Community Reception and Audiences

The Queen, together with other members of the Royal Family, hosted a reception for members of the Irish community at Buckingham Palace.

Big news: Her Majesty met one of the One Direction people. (I'm sure she could hardly contain herself.) But no, here's the big news that matters to this blog: she gave us a second outing of the diamond and emerald Shamrock Brooch! Huzzah. It was last seen in 2012 during her visit to Northern Ireland, so she's sticking strictly to her theme. Unfortunately, it's not a fantastic match to a patterned suit - just a little too delicate to be recognized.
The reception was held because the Irish president is arriving for a state visit on April 8th. Perhaps we'll get another look at the Irish Silver Spiral Brooch from her 2011 Irish visit?

Also today... The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace, receiving the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador plus a new recipient of the Order of Merit. It was purple heaven - click here for a gallery.

Flashback: Parliament Opening, Canberra, Australia, 1954

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, opened Parliament in Canberra, Australia, in February 1954.
During her landmark post-Coronation tour of Australia in 1954, one of the Queen's most anticipated events was the opening of Parliament in Canberra. She did not disappoint, turning up in tremendous splendor: Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara, the Coronation Necklace and Earrings, a bracelet and evening watch, the Riband (secured with one of Queen Victoria's Bow Brooches, I believe), Star, and Lesser George of the Order of the Garter. All those diamonds had some serious competition for sparkle, though, because this is one of the occasions after the 1953 Coronation for which the Queen wore her spectacular Coronation gown. This is also just one of several tiara events on that tour.

Video: The Queen in Australia, Part 1 (playlist for all 7 parts)
I recently stumbled across a long film on YouTube chronicling the Queen's long Australian visit back in 1954 which is really rather charming - and a good watch in honor of Australia Day! (It's in 7 parts, the embedded video above includes a playlist for all 7.) The Parliament opening in Canberra included here is shown in Part 2.

In current news... The Queen made her annual visit to the Sandringham Women's Institute meeting on January 23, wearing the Amethyst Bouquet Brooch. Today, January 26, she braved the rain to attend church at Sandringham wearing Queen Victoria's 11 Pearl Brooch.

Coronation Bouquet Presentation and Buckingham Palace Garden Party

The Queen held audiences at Buckingham Palace and received the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, who presented her with a replica of her coronation bouquet to mark the 60th anniversary of the coronation. Later, she hosted a garden party, accompanied by other members of the royal family.

You know, I almost said yesterday how nice it was to get the Kent Amethyst instead of this one...and here we are! She's gonna need a bigger purple selection if we continue on like this. Anyway, receiving a bouquet calls for a bouquet brooch of one sort or another. Click here for an article about the replica bouquet.
For the garden party, she brought out one we haven't seen in close to a year - and the last time we saw it, it was on this same outfit, pink and bows, practically too sweet. Click here for an article on the garden party, which was the first one attended by Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie (who somehow managed to leave the statement hats to their aunt Anne).
